Watching a Daughter Grow Up on the Slopes

Watching a Daughter Grow Up on the Slopes

It’s early Saturday morning, and I wished I was still in bed. Instead, I was making my way down and across a deserted Colorado mountain on my skis in a heavy snowstorm so that I could watch my 17-year-old daughter Reggie ski down a slope so steep and rocky that it’s been closed to the public for years.
I must be crazy, I thought, wiping snow from my goggles as I hiked through deep snow, carrying my skis to the remote, rugged area of Crested Butte Mountain Resort, where Reggie was to ski on the final day of the Saab U.S. Extreme Freeskiing Competition in 2004.
Sure, I’ve tried to raise my two daughters and my son to seek challenges. Like you, I’ve hoped that travel has shown them how exciting and exhilarating it can be to step out of their comfort

Weekly Pulse DearJohn Does Banning Abortion Trump Job Growth

by Lindsay Beyerstein, Media Consortium blogger
With millions of Americans out of work, House Republicans are focusing in on real priorities: decimating private abortion coverage and crippling public funding for abortion, as Jessica Arons reports in RH Reality Check. In AlterNet, Amanda Marcotte notes that the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, or H.R. 3, also redefines rape as “forcible rape” in order to determine whether a patient is eligible for a Medicaid-funded abortion. Under the Hyde Amendment, government-funded insurance programs can only cover abortions in cases of rape and incest, or to save the life of the

Good News EPA Will Finally Regulate Rocket Fuel in Drinking Water

Today is a good day for public health! EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson announced her intention to regulate perchlorate, a toxic chemical that contaminates water and food across the country. The EPA has only been trying to do so since 2002 — the whole Bush Administration! Up to now the Bush White House had been interfering with EPA’s attempts to regulate it, as a favor to the Defense Department and its contractors so they wouldn’t have to face strict clean up requirements or potential liabilities. This has been a long time coming.
EPA’s decision to regulate perchlorate in drinking water will not only protect our health but reverses bad public policy that has put us at risk for years. It is a hazardous chemical component of explosives that was used in rocket fuel, and is still used in fireworks and air bags.
According to a 2010 report by an independent investigative arm of Congress, GAO, Perchlorate has been found in water and other media at varying levels in 45 states, as well as in the food supply, and comes from a variety of

Connected Arab Youth Are the Secret to Present Uprising

To understand what is happening in the Arab world today you need to know only two things. That the majority of Arabs are young, and for the most part many of them are connected to the net. And despite the fear mongering in the West, these connected Arab youth are secular, although not totally opposed to the need for all individuals and groups, including the Muslim Brotherhood, to be represented in any future power sharing government.
Studies issued by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) say that youth between the ages of 15-24 constitute the largest age group among Arab populations. These youth represent more than one third of the total citizens of the Arab world’s 23 countries.
Though the largest age group population-wise, the youth nonetheless face the greatest challenge in terms of

5 Political Films Worth Seeing

When I was back in the States over the holidays, I had an interesting dinner conversation with a friend of a friend. I can’t remember how it got started, but suddenly there I was, listing my favorite all-time movies.
And in constructing my list out loud, I realized how many of my favorite films have to do with politics in some way, shape or form.
So since it’s Oscar season — and that always gets me thinking about the kinds of movies I like and why — I thought I’d share with you five political movies worth seeing:
1. Reds. This may be my all-time favorite movie,

Perhaps Charlie Sheen Should Try a Different Approach

Perhaps Charlie Sheen Should Try a Different Approach

Charlie Sheen’s repeated relapses — and returns to treatment — suggest that perhaps he might look at different approaches to his addictive problems. What he’s been doing doesn’t seem to be working so well for him — as it has failed many others.
Sheen has been in and out of standard disease, 12-step therapy of the kind depicted on “Celebrity Rehab” and “Intervention” and practiced at Betty Ford, Hazelden, and virtually every other public and private treatment program in the United States. But this is not the standard treatment everywhere (in much of Europe and the British Commonwealth, for instance).
Other approaches — which have more often been empirically validated in clinical trials — include motivational enhancement (allowing addicts to grasp the divergence between their behavior and their values), skills training (including problem-solving, assertiveness training, emotional self-management), community reinforcement (integrating rewards for sobriety into people’s daily lives — including their families and social groups).
These other approaches are generally labeled “cognitive-behavioral therapy”

Women Are Casualties in High Profile Abortion Fight

The year has gotten off to a bad start for everyone with a stake in the fight over abortion rights. Instead of focusing efforts to repeal Roe v. Wade on political solutions and lobbying, the pro-life movement continues to adopt the tactics of obstruction at all costs, dragging medical professionals into a political minefield and putting patients at risk.
In Pennsylvania, when a grand jury indictment for abortionist Kermit Gosnell went public, the whole country got a reminder of what it looks like when medicine is allowed to fester without oversight. Gosnell was a butcher who for whom medical malpractice as his standard operating

Republicans Announce Already You Cant Beat Somebody with Nobody

Republicans Announce Already You Cant Beat Somebody with Nobody

At this point one would have to bet heavily that Barack Obama will be re-elected in 2012 to his second term as president.
Where in the world are the people on the Republican side who are going to challenge Obama for the right to sit in the Oval Office starting in January, 2013?
Why are the 2012 presidential possibilities on the GOP side being so coy and lackluster and saying it is too early to make the decision to run for the White House?
Surely, former presidential candidate Mitt Romney is not going on David Letterman to do his top ten list for no reason after being on CNN earlier discussing his religion and politics.
The former Governor of Massachusetts told the viewers on the Piers Morgan show that he had not made up his mind-right -and that is why he is on two national talk shows in one night in February
.
While President Obama is on the job discussing the events from Tunisia to Egypt and what the United States should be doing in these tense and chaotic situations his potential GOP opponents are on the sideline not commenting on the proper role for the United States.
At least a member of the Obama Administration seems inclined to run for the White House in 2012. The former Governor of Utah Jon Huntsman is leaving Beijing to come back and see if the time is right for him to throw his hat in the ring. It might be a little difficult to criticize the Obama foreign policy especially towards China since he was our spokesman for the policy while serving as American Ambassador to China.
Huntsman brings some foreign policy credentials to the job if he decides to run which it looks as if he will when he resigns his post in April.
It is interesting that many analysts suggest that Romney couldn’t make it to the White House because of his Mormon religion but I have heard very little about Huntsman being held back by his Mormon religion.
And, the question has to be asked: Why are some Americans so skeptical of Romney and his religious beliefs? Why do some American voters feel a sense of unease over the Mormon religion? Hopefully, Romney put that question to rest in 2008 and he and Huntsman won’t have to face this issue in 2012.
In 2007, Mike Huckabee had already announced for president by this time but now he says he has all the time in the world to announce as he makes his mandatory trip to the Middle East to show his foreign policy credentials.
Sarah Palin seems to not be setting up any type of national organization to launch her expected run for 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. She needs to get a positive message going and establish some gravitas if she seriously wants to run in

Imagery Gives Voice to Your Emotions

Imagery is the language of the arts, the emotions, your deeper self, and the brain regions in which that ancient wisdom abides. It is the neurological “royal road” to reconnecting with the deep emotional and intuitive wisdom that has guided us to thrive, or at least survive, for hundreds of millions of years. When we aren’t sure what to do, when we have a problem that we can’t figure out, or when we have physical symptoms that defy medical understanding or treatment, imagery makes room for the silent, emotional, intuitive areas of our brains to express themselves and add their wisdom to our perspective.
Julie, a 46-year-old health professional, volunteered to be a demonstration subject in an imagery class I was teaching. She told me that she had been suffering severe pain in both forearms for over three

Murdochs The Daily Is a Day Late and 99 Cents Short

Like a morning paper, the cover story of The Daily focuses on yesterday’s news.
I really wanted to like The Daily, the new iPad-only newspaper from Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. The idea of a 21st century newspaper that combines, text, graphics, video and social networking in a singe app is very appealing. And the iPad is a great delivery platform for the content. I was also impressed by the effort News Corp put into this

Lady Dracula Sees Gobs Of New Jobs

For the moment, at least, America’s biggest economic worry — the lofty unemployment rate — may finally be taking a decided turn for the better.
In December, 103,000 new jobs were created in non-farm payroll employment. The January number, to be reported shortly by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, could double that with a gain of between 175,000 and 215,000 jobs, according to Madeline Schnapp, the economics chief of West Coast liquidity tracker TrimTabs Research.
“We expect the job growth reported by the BLS to surprise on the upside,” she says.
Interestingly, Schnapp, who got the moniker “Lady Dracula” in economic circles for being exceptionally bearish on the economy in recent years, has had a change of heart. No longer, like last October, is she warning of a gory jobs story. The reason for her shift, she tells me: the trillions of dollars in freshly printed and borrowed money pouring into the system, which she thinks could be a boon for new job creations..
Given her altered economic stance, maybe she should undergo a name change, say Glinda, who was the good witch of the north in the Wizard of Oz.
Why the creation of gobs of new jobs in January? Schnapp offers a slew of reasons, namely:
- The TrimTabs online jobs posting index rose 4.5% in January, the biggest monthly gain since October of 2010.
- Initial unemployment claims have been trending lower since August of 2010.
- Commercial and industrial loan growth accelerated to 1% in the past

Wall Street Apologists Need to Acknowledge the Truth

The recently released Financial Crisis Inquiry Report makes it clear that there is enough blame to go around for the financial collapse of 2008. Wall Street hustlers looking to make quick bucks made huge bets on the housing bubble that ultimately came crashing down, the government not wanting to stop the good times did little to regulate Wall Street, the public bought into the dream and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac too eagerly chased business. However, many on the right see no fault on Wall Street and blame the whole thing on Fannie and Freddie. How narrow-minded can they be?
The chief man with blinders on appears to be Peter Wallison of the American Enterprise

Pathways to Endless Possibilities

It should be clear by now that a high school education is not enough to prepare students for success in today’s workforce, let alone tomorrow’s. Many students will go on to four-year colleges, many more will receive other types of post-secondary credentials. For far too many, without guidance, may not make it past high school, and their career options are bleak. So what’s the solution? How do we prepare all students for life after high school?
A new report from Harvard Graduate School of Education, entitled “Pathways to Prosperity: Meeting the Challenge of Preparing Young Americans for the 21st Century” outlines several successful models for career and college readiness, both stateside and

Dont Forget Iran

Watching this new video produced by the human rights NGO Iran 180, I was struck by Congressman Barney Frank’s pithy summation of what good governance involves. “No government ought to consider itself threatened by its citizens wanting to express themselves,” Frank said. “And no truly popular government need worry about that.”
Frank was addressing the Iranian people, but his remarks are applicable to Egypt too. And they stand out in marked contrast to this next item, so excruciating that a word like “hypocrisy” simply falls short as a

The Trouble With Hosni

The Trouble With Hosni

The hair dye and makeup should have been the clue.
What could have been the opening gambit in a negotiation for his departure, turned out to be the first salvo of the counterattack.
In his televised address Tuesday night, the Egyptian president was rejuvenated.
Without a grey hair on his 82-year-old head, and his wrinkle-free face the envy of a Hollywood actress, Hosni Mubarak looked ready for another 30 years.
He did offer the first public acknowledgment that his reign was coming to an end, but we should fear autocrats even when they are bearing concessions.
I had focused on the latter half of the speech. The part where he insisted that he would die in Egypt, as an understandable determination not to end up like Tunisian President Ben Ali, or the Shah of Iran before him, in a humiliating hop scotch around the world looking for safe harbor.
The reference to his military career was also resonant. It reminded everyone that he was, in the phrase of the late president Anwar Sadat, a ‘glorious son of October.’ Mubarak distinguished himself in the 1973 war with Israel, which redeemed the pride of the Egyptian army after the long humiliation of the 1967 defeat, and led to his appointment as vice

Conservatives Enraged Over Judicial Activism Displayed in Health Care Bill Ruling

Conservatives are outraged over decisions by two federal judges ruling against the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act (or Obamacare as they wont to call it). They point out that the legislation was duly enacted by both the House and Senate, the elected representatives of the people and signed into law by the President of the United States, who was elected by a substantial majority of the American people. Rush Limbaugh declared it a perfect example of the men in black robes “thwarting the will of the people”. Senators Hatch and Sessions issued a joint statement reminding that they had warned about judges who would “legislate from the bench and impose their own agenda” rather than upholding and enforcing the duly adopted law of the land.
Glenn Beck cried out in despair that the decisions reminded him of what had happened in Nazi

New Start treaty - Obama signs nuclear pact with Russia

Will President Obama Finally Protect Americas Last Remnants of Wilderness

There have recently been a flurry of news reports on the Obama administration’s new “wild lands” policy, but these reports failed to fully explain how this policy is merely the latest move in a 35-year-long battle over the few remaining wilderness areas in the US. These pristine areas are already owned by the public, so preserving them for future generations should be a no-brainer. Unfortunately, it is not yet clear that the Obama administration is serious about protecting them.
It’s frustrating to be a public lands advocate, for at least three reasons.
The first reason: If there were a referendum on our issues, we would win easily and overwhelmingly. What are our issues? The main one is preserving the few public lands which remain in a relatively pristine
