My Conversation With Aretha Franklin

I recently sat down with the Queen of Soul, the legendary singer Aretha Franklin, on my syndicated radio show, The Tavis Smiley Show from PRI, to discuss her 50th anniversary in show business, life — including the latest details of her health, and a new album by Columbia Records.
During our conversation, Ms.

Cuba jails US aid worker Alan Gross
  • US aid worker Alan Gross has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for crimes against the state in Cuba.
Mr Gross, 61, was arrested in December 2009 accused of setting up illegal internet connections in Cuba under a programme funded by the US government.
His work involved distributing communications equipment to Jewish communities in Havana.
The US has warned that there can be no further easing of relations between the two countries until he is released.
Mr Gross was in Cuba working as a contractor for the US Agency for International Development (USAID) on a programme aimed at promoting democracy in

Meltdown The Japanese Earthquake and Fukushima Reactors

We shouldn’t have another nuclear catastrophe to realize there are better, much safer ways to make electricity.
In the aftermath of the largest earthquake to occur in Japan in recorded history, thousands of residents living within 12 miles of six reactors at the Fukushima nuclear station have been advised to evacuate and people living within 15 miles of the plant are advised to remain indoors.
Plant operators have not been able to cool down the core of at least two reactors containing enormous amounts of radioactivity because of failed back-up diesel generators required for the emergency cooling. In a race against time, the power company and the Japanese military are flying in more than a dozen emergency generators. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton announced yesterday that the

    What If

I am asking all HuffPosters to share my January 2010 post about Haiti and our need for preparedness in case of an emergency.
    Please share it and this:
I watched the Oscars (wish I hadn’t) and there was the special effects reel of a Clint Eastwood movie I missed seeing. There was the tsunami effect of a wave washing over a village or town. Personally I thought it looked a tad cheesy and not realistic. After yesterday though, I sit humbled and dumbfounded at the power of nature and the hubris of man to think we can hold it back.
I am one of the National Red Cross supporters who talks about preparedness,

America Is a Bastion of Hope Not a Beacon of Nope

House Republicans have taken another pound-foolish step by voting to axe a program that provides a lifeline for middle-class homeowners who face foreclosure through no fault of their own because of the predatory and economy-wrecking policies of Wall Street.
The Emergency Mortgage Relief Program, which Republicans voted to de-fund in H.R. 836, replicates a successful program that I helped create as a young state legislator in Pennsylvania in the 1980s — and which was signed into law by a Republican governor.
Emergency mortgage relief is not an untried or experimental program. Nor is it a grant or

    Cactus Flower Abloom Off Broadway

Abe Burrows’ 1965 comedy Cactus Flower would not be a likely candidate for revival with its retrograde-if quaintly hilarious-take on matters of the heart. But Burrows’ musical, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, for which he won the Pulitzer Prize is now in previews on Broadway; maybe there’s business in the madness.
At the Westside Theater opening Thursday night, director Michael Bush explained, he wanted to do the quintessential 60′s comedy. Silly in the manner of a Feydeau-farce set in a dentist’s office, a bedroom, a nightclub, with lots of doors slamming, this Cactus Flower still has such charm and good spirit, it makes for a delightful evening of

Earthquakes and Cancer Aint No Use To Sit and Wonder Why

They saved the best news for last.
As I was about to leave the emergency room cubicle where Frank lay with two broken legs, a serious hemmorhage and a cancer diagnosis, his wife Holly described the doctor who had been in to see them before I showed up at the local hospital.
“He didn’t look at all like I imagined him,” said Holly, describing a small, elderly gentleman — who just happened to be Frank’s oncologist. “Frank, we’re going to cure you,” Dr. Greenberg told the couple, according to Holly.
This was good news. No, this was fabulous news.
In the small country parish where I am the priest-in-charge, Frank is universally loved, a genuinely kind man with a matter-of-fact manner and a quick wit.
Quickly I worked out the implications in my mind.
“Breaking both of your legs was a bit of a blessing, wasn’t it?” I asked

My column runs on Saturdays, so you’re likely reading this on the weekend. Are you barefoot, and luxuriating in soft carpeting under your toes as you relax? And did you know that you can influence whether the rugs you buy for your home and office are made with child labour or not?
Well, with a little help from the folks at GoodWeave, you can. GoodWeave certifies child-labour-free rugs and provides education and opportunities for children who are rescued as well as those at risk.
How can you tell if that gorgeous handmade rug you have your eye on (or that’s underfoot right now) was made without child labour? Look for the GoodWeave label — in order to earn it, rug exporters and importers must be

I know that she was homeless, that she was unhappy. I know that, one day, something happened that made her want to take back control.

    When Meat Contains CancerCausing Toxins

Jenna Woginrich was a vegetarian for most of her adult life until she became aware of the horrors of conventional American livestock farming. She now owns and operates a small environmentally friendly farm where she raises chicken, pork, lamb, rabbit, turkey and eggs.
    In AlterNet, Woginrich writes:
    This is a powerful thought.
Avoiding meat really doesn’t do anything to change the system. Insisting that the meat is humanely raised, however, will.
Just imagine how the demand would change the face of the meat industry if vegetarians everywhere simply sought out organic, grass-fed meats, instead of avoiding the issue entirely.

Is Flaxseed Enough Omega3 For Men

Debate over the health benefits and risks of flaxseed and omega-3 fatty acids, in particular alpha-linolenic acid (ALA- a form of omega-3 fatty acids), is ongoing and often contentious. People tend to become very defensive about their food choices, especially when they are making those choices because they are trying to prevent and/or treat a serious health problem, such as prostate cancer.
One controversy related to omega-3 fatty acids is whether ALA and flaxseed, which is a rich source of ALA, are beneficial or harmful to prostate health. According to medical oncologist and prostate cancer researcher Snuffy Myers, M.D., flaxseed and ALA, contrary to popular marketing, are not helpful for overall health nor for prostate

    The Big One Hits Japan

I spent most of the first 18 years of my life in Japan and the idea of the Big One striking was as much a part of life as eating and breathing. Still, nothing prepares for the incredible site of Japanese homes, businesses and lives being washed away in a split second.
We learn a lot about each other in moments of crisis but there are many things about the Japanese and we Americans that we already know: Japanese are sober-minded and clear-headed in moments of crisis like this — it’s highly unlikely that they’ll loot or in any way take advantage of the tragedy for personal gain. Rather they’ll look out for their neighbors and help one

    King Not Fit to Lead

For all the fanfare and bluster, the U.S. House of Representative’s Committee on Homeland Security hearings on “The Extent of Radicalization in the Muslim Community and That Community’s Response” produced little of value. The entire affair was so shockingly ill-conceived and so poorly executed as to leave one wondering whether the Committee’s Chairman, New York Republican Peter King, was fit to lead.
Since King first announced the hearings, American Muslims, Arab Americans and a host of civil rights organizations feared that the effort could become a McCarthy-like witch hunt. And for good reason.
King has a long history of making virulently anti-Muslim

WI Firefighters Spark Move Your Money Moment

On the day that the bill passed the Wisconsin Assembly effectively ending 50 years of collective bargaining in Wisconsin and eviscerating the ability of public unions to raise money through dues, a new front opened in the battle for the future of Wisconsin families.
Bagpipes blaring, hundreds of firefighters walked across the street from the Wisconsin Capitol building, stood outside the Marshall and Ilsley Bank (M&I Bank) and played a few tunes — loudly. Later, a group of firefighter and consumers stopped back in at the bank to make a few transactions. One by one they closed their accounts and withdrew their life savings, totaling approximately $190,000. After the last customer left, the bank quickly closed its doors, just in case the spontaneous “Move Your Money” moment caught fire.

One would think a themed route sporting the cheesy name “Romantic Road” would rank pretty high on the list of global tourist traps. Wouldn’t be too far off the mark for assuming so. A Conservatives Case For Farmers Markets

EVERY THURSDAY EVENING at around 7 p.m., I begin checking outside my side door to see if the elves have made their delivery yet.
It’s quite amazing: At one moment the brick stoop is empty. In the next, a rustic white-painted wooden box with a black lid sits waiting for me to bring it in to the kitchen.
I open it with an unfailing sense of awe and wonder. During the previous week, the elves have been traveling all over the countryside, seeking out the freshest and most delicious things to eat. This night’s offering: some fantastically colored carrots, purple and yellow along with the more familiar orange; filets of local wild flounder, packed in ice; two young chickens,

The 10 Best Books About New York

I first moved to New York City in 1996, and I have no need or desire to live anywhere else in the world. After living in New York City for over half of my adult life, I still find myself in many New York moments that remind me why I’m living in the greatest city in the world. Strolling in Central Park in the summer with my kids, we might come across a line of people who waited overnight to see Shakespeare in the Park with some of the world’s best actors, take in the sights and sounds at the Boathouse restaurant and arrive at the amazingly entertaining Rose Planetarium at the Museum of Natural History. On the tiny island of Manhattan, endless opportunities arise for entertainment, stimulation and

Our place in the world often revolves around what we are seen to have. Our beliefs support this reality. We look good and therefore we are

Yoga In The US Should There Be Stricter Licensing Standards

On a bright Monday morning at New York Yoga, 14 students in sweatpants and t-shirts sit on technicolored yoga mats, waiting for Michael Gilbert, a 25-year yoga veteran, to begin their weekly vinyasa class. After a few minutes of chanting “ohm,” he instructs students in surya-namaskar — the time-honored practice of sun salutation that leads the body through a whole range of motions.
Similar scenes replay daily in thousands of studios across the country. Over the past decade, yoga practitioners and schools have mushroomed; endorsed by celebrities and athletes, it’s being taught in churches and gyms and even over the Internet. In 2008 it drew 16 million practitioners, according to Yoga Journal and Harris
