President Obama Wins the First Round With Paul Ryan

Yesterday’s presidential address on fiscal policy was a very striking scene. The venue was a small auditorium at George Washington University. Invitations went out just two days earlier; and with so little notice, GWU students made up more than half of the audience. Another row was filled up by former Democratic economic policy officials — myself and perhaps 10 others — directors of Democratic-allied policy shops (including NDN’s Simon Rosenberg), and a smattering of CEOs and senior Senate

Getting Communications Security Right

Between the mid 1970s and the late 1990s, the government fought industry and academia over cryptography. The National Security Agency (NSA) had been accustomed to being the only one in the ring designing cryptographic systems and decoding messages, and it didn’t take nicely to the competition. First NSA attempted to stop researchers from publishing. That stopped quickly though “reviews” were still

Think Taxes Are too Complicated They Thought So in 1915 too

Other than “too much,” the most common complaint about the income tax is probably “too complicated.” Fair enough. But let’s not turn this legitimate objection into another count in the indictment of modern American government.
The income tax today is complex, but it was complex in decades past, too. In fact, if you take contemporaries at their word, it was always complex.
Consider this little historical

10 Chain Restaurants Worth Visiting

The world has changed in some fairly huge and achingly obvious ways since milkshake-machine salesman Ray Kroc bought a small-scale restaurant franchise called McDonald’s in 1954. One way is that, as the “food revolution” meets an increasingly impecunious American public, chain restaurants are thriving. The good news is that chains aren’t necessarily what they used to be — which is to say places whose sole goal is to render us fat and stupid with huge portions of mediocre food at bargain prices.
While we were busy watching Alice Waters plant edible schoolyard gardens, some enterprising franchisers went out and hired chefs and folks who know a thing or two about what tastes good, and along the way they’ve gotten wise to the fact that we’re starting to expect things like organic milk on kiddie menus and sea salt on fries. That’s smart: Restaurant business executives say that to thrive in this economy, chains of every stripe, from fast-food stands to “dinner houses” are going to have to raise the quality of their food without substantially raising prices.
The fact is that some chains have gotten pretty

The Egg Inside and Out

In the world of computer software a Virtual Easter Egg is a hidden message within the text or program that once clicked on, opens up to reveal a joke or feature. It is the modern day version of the Russian cluster egg and takes its name from the first Faberge Egg that opened up to reveal a golden egg. Recently Lady Gaga used the idea when she gave birth to herself out of a transparent Egg at the Grammy Awards. For a long time, the artist Hope Sandrow has been fascinated by this conundrum and the multi-step process of discovery, of worlds and landscapes and ideas hidden inside containers that are both virtual and

Sensibility Over Partisanship in Preventing Teen Pregnancy

Nearly two years ago, the Obama administration shifted the federal government’s position on teen sexuality education and pregnancy prevention. Rather than solely funding “abstinence-only” programs, the President decided to invest in programs that actually work. For the first time, the federal government was taking the far-reaching crisis of teen pregnancy seriously enough to get past politics and focus on results.
The statistics on teen pregnancy and sexuality in America are

Art in the Streets at MOCA This ArtweekLA April 1824

Art in the Streets is the first major U.S. museum survey of graffiti and street art. Curated by MOCA Director Jeffrey Deitch and Associate Curators Roger Gastman and Aaron Rose, the exhibition traces the development of graffiti and street art from the 1970s to the global movement it has become today, concentrating on key cities such as New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, and Sao Paulo, where a unique visual language or attitude has evolved.
Art in the Streets showcases installations by 50 of the most dynamic artists from the graffiti and street art community, including Banksy (London), Fab 5 Freddy (New York), Lee Quiones (New York), Futura (New York), Margaret Kilgallen (San Francisco), Swoon (New York), Shepard Fairey (Los Angeles), Os Gemeos (So Paulo), and JR

US air controller suspended after watching film at work
  • A US air traffic controller has been suspended for watching a film when he was supposed to be monitoring aircraft, in the wake of a series of reports of controllers sleeping at work.
The incident occurred on Sunday at a radar centre in Oberlin in Ohio, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
The worker's microphone inadvertently transmitted the movie's audio to all nearby planes, the FAA said.
The FAA has suspended nine controllers and supervisors since late March.
Former FAA chief Hank Krakowski, who oversaw the day-to-day operations of 15,000 controllers at 400 airports, resigned last

Eliminate Wasteful Tax Expenditures Achieve Huge Budget Savings and Ensure MiddleClass Fairness

More of the “tax day” focus should have been on wasteful tax code spending known as tax expenditures. Tax expenditures are subsidies, tax credits, deductions, exclusions, exemptions and special preferential rates for individuals, business and corporations hidden in the tax code in that once enacted they do not have to be reauthorized or included in annual appropriations legislation.
To that end, yesterday in a conference call with Nobel Prize-winning economist, Joseph Stiglitz, and policy expert, Seth Hanlon, of the Center for American Progress, I announced my intent to file legislation eliminating nearly 30 tax expenditures that would save over $60 billion in the first year and nearly $483 billion over the next 5 years.
The tax subsidies and giveaways targeted in my bill, entitled the Tax Equity and Middle Class Fairness Act of 2011, serve little or no public purpose, are poorly designed, or have not fulfilled their original

Avoiding the Parent Trap How to Change Your Thoughts About Parenting Teens

It’s hard to say how it started.
I know for a fact that we parent teens today with more fear, ego and judgment than calm, confidence and openness. There are countless theories as to why.
Maybe it’s a lack of familiarity with their lightning-paced world of Facebook, texting and YouTube. Maybe we’re worried about what other parents will think of our kids, or of us. Maybe the iron fist held more sway a generation

NFL Labor Pains The Spending Problem

Having been both a player agent and team executive, there are great challenges in convincing players to defer major purchases and save their money.
Most players have not had access to large sums of money and with a stroke of a pen, they do. The urge to spend is strong, especially with what I call the “whisper crew” — friends, relatives, hangers-on, etc. — surrounding them.
Players generally have a very short-term outlook on life. They are concerned about the next workout, the next practice, the next game and, most importantly, the next

    The Trouble with Testosterone

By guest blogger Peter Moore, editor of Men’s Health magazine and coauthor, with Travis Stork, MD, of the Lean Belly Prescription
A few years back, we editors at Men’s Health decided to put our masculinity on the line and test our testosterone levels. Isn’t that just what you picture Men’s Health editors doing, dip-sticking their masculinity in their spare work time?
As if we have any spare work time, what with watching out for the fate of mankind and the state of our six-packs. Both of those are closely tied to our T levels, of course. Hence the urge to test.
We didn’t do it by arm wrestling, or playing “chicken” out on an abandoned

Why You Should Set Working Boundaries

“Whatever you are willing to put up with is exactly what you will have.”
    –Anonymous
It is never too late to learn about your boundaries. I am coming to believe that it is perhaps one of the aspects of living that most defines our maturity and facility for accomplishing our goals. Boundary issues are common to most of us; in fact, our personal boundaries are the basic yet often invisible rulebook that guides all of our relationships. Our boundaries define how and what we communicate and what we give and receive, and they even provide, in the most basic sense, the parameters for what we expect from others and life itself.
Boundaries reflect how we love ourselves and what we value most
