The Base and the Swing Part 7132

The Base and the Swing Part 7132

There is no doubt at all that there are demographic groups that can be accurately categorized as base voting blocs (of both parties) and as swing voting blocs, and politicians must appeal to both to win elections. The key is to position yourself in a way that genuinely does appeal to both — that both fires up your side and resonates with those in the middle. The great fallacy for Democrats is in thinking those two kinds of voters are so far apart on the most important issues in determining their voting. This debate keeps raging in Democratic circles, and I expect it will continue to for the foreseeable future.
Historically, swing voters tend to be, as Lee Atwater and most Republican strategists for the last 50 years have understood, economically

The Strip Diary Weekend Roundup Even More Vegas Hotel Reviews in Haiku Form

You know that old phrase? Time flies when you’re staying a single night in every single hotel on the Vegas Strip? Well it’s true!
You know that other phrase? That you’ll bust your ass all week writing about Elvis wedding chapels, blogging escorts, terrible parents and dangerous circus acts — but all anyone will compliment you on are the damn haiku? Turns out that’s true too!
And so here we are, at the end of week three, and time for another round up my past week’s hotel stays — from Paris to the Wynn — in handy haiku form.

Healthy Aging A Cheat Sheet

When it comes to your health, it’s a jungle out there. If you are over 65, the predators include chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease and arthritis. Even with modern medicine behind you, they can disable and kill you before your time — unless you take evasive action.
Sadly, this is not

Christiane Wells Living With the Stigma of Mental Illness

By Christiane Wells
If you have a mental illness, one thing you learn is how to deal with people who mock the disorder you’ve been diagnosed with. From strangers to television shows to coworkers, it is hard to escape those who make hurtful remarks about people with bipolar disorder. The misconceptions surrounding bipolar disorder are many, and until they are dispelled, stigma will continue to cause people to suffer alone — hesitant or fearful to admit they have a mental illness lest their friends, family and coworkers discover they are “crazy.”
My last job, as a caseworker in child protection, was a real lesson in learning not to betray my hurt feelings when people I liked and respected spoke ill of clients with bipolar disorder. They had no idea (yet) about my own struggle with bipolar disorder, and didn’t realize they might as well have been talking about

Letters From Tim Hetherington

This morning I printed out all the emails Tim Hetherington sent to me over the last few weeks. They were short but thoughtful. I smiled every time my Gmail chimed, every time his name popped up in my inbox.
Tim died Wednesday in Misrata, Libya, while covering Gaddafi’s attack on rebel forces, one the great photographers silenced forever. It’s hard to imagine that his name will never appear in my inbox again.
I met Tim at the Columbia Journalism School, at a screening of Restrepo, the Afghan war documentary he co-directed with Sebastian

Tornado closes St Louis airport

The US airport of Lambert-St Louis has been closed indefinitely after a tornado ripped through its main terminal.

The storm tore off a large section of the terminal's roof, shattering windows and sending debris flying.

Several people were being treated for minor injuries.

The storm, one of a series to pass through central and eastern Missouri, also flattened homes in the area, felled trees and tore down power lines.

Lambert-St Louis airport said all flights were cancelled pending full safety assessments, and a clean-up was under

Let the UN Act on Palestine

The Middle East is in turmoil, its political map being rewritten by revolts against the status quo. But in the heart of this region, in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, actors, on all sides, appear to be stuck playing out the same stale scenes.

Kate Middletons Royal Wedding Dress and What Else to Watch For on April 29

Kate Middletons Royal Wedding Dress and What Else to Watch For on April 29

With less than a week to go before the royal wedding, I’m in London on assignment for The Huffington Post where I’ll be bringing you coverage of all the festivities. On the day of the wedding, I’ll also be joining the BBC as a special royal commentator.
If the estimated figure of 2 billion viewers is correct, this will be the most-watched televised wedding in history and one heading straight for the record books. But here’s what I’ll be watching for:
The Dress
Now that I broke the news on April 16 that Sophie Cranston is believed to be the royal wedding dress designer, will Kate change the gown she’ll be wearing on the big day? It’s been reported that three dresses by three different designers had been commissioned in case the name of her first choice is leaked.
So far, every designer that has been tipped as the royal wedding dressmaker has denied his or her involvement. As expected, Cranston also issued a denial to the rumors that she has been chosen — partly due to the unprecedented media attention she has now received, which must be quite overwhelming for a small

First US Predator strike in Libya

The US military has confirmed the first strike by an unmanned Predator drone aircraft in Libya.

The Pentagon did not provide details of the target, but said that it occurred in the early afternoon local time.

Drones can hit military targets more easily in urban areas, minimising the risk of civilian casualties.

Earlier, Libya's government warned that tribes loyal to Col Muammar Gaddafi might take over the fight against the rebels in the western city of

Jeff Koons Must Die 4 Other Art Video Games You Can Actually Play

With the Smithsonian set to crown video games the latest institutionally-ratified art form next year with its “The Art of Video Games” show, we thought it was about time to take a look at the subject of video games as fodder for visual artists. The subject has received increasing attention, from Carolina Miranda’s smart feature in ARTnews to proliferating courses in digital and interactive media at art schools all over. But we didn’t just want to focus on artworks that took video games as subject matter, we wanted to see what examples there were out there that actually tried to merge the sensibility of gamers into the sensibility of fine arts, in however awkward a way. In other words, we wanted art that we could actually

A Life Lesson The Man Who Demanded Bread

A Life Lesson The Man Who Demanded Bread

One summer many years ago, when I was traveling with my husband and two small sons through Scandinavia, we overnighted in a campground outside Stockholm.
Our Volkswagen camper’s top was popped up, and my two little boys were still snoring lightly in early-morning sleep. Hubby was already puttering behind the boxy van, and I was outside getting things ready for breakfast. I was literally a happy camper.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, a thin man wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap came into my vision. He stood there and said quietly, “Give me your bread.”
At first I thought, “I wonder if he wants white or rye”? We just had bought some hot dog

Putting Teen Birth Rates on the Maps

The latestMorbidity and Mortality Weekly Report is out, with a report on teen birth rates in the U.S. The press release announces, “U.S. Teen Birth Rate Fell to Record Low in 2009.” (The report has information about birth control, virginity and sex education as well.)
The CDC’s vital signs pamphlet still calls the rates “unacceptably high” and notes that they are “up to 9 times higher than in most other developed countries.”* Within the U.S. we have about a 4-to-1 ratio in teen birth rates between the states with highest and lowest rates, as you can see from this map:
Teen birth rates are the number of births per 1,000 women ages 15 to 19.

Was FDR Born That Way

I can’t wait to see historianJo B. Paoletti’s forthcoming book”Pink and Blue: Telling the Girls from the Boys in America.” Her work is profiled in a new Smithsonian.com article my friend Scott showed me. I used an article of hers to write about historical changes in the social construction of gender for children, which got me into the whole gender-color thing.
The Smithsonian article has this great portrait of Franklin Roosevelt at about age 2, dressed — as children typically were at that time — in a gender-neutral outfit of frilly white dress, patent-leather shoes, feathery hat and long hair:
I recommend the article.
It reminds me of the Born This Way blog, which features pictures of kids that, in the view of their adult selves, express their true nature.

Free Your Feet Change Your Life

by , under NEWS
Free Your Feet Change Your Life

In 1980, I was traveling in Kenya’s Aberdare mountain range with my father, Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld — renowned cardiologist and host of Fox News Sunday’s “Housecall” — when a runner burst into camp, having run 26 miles to deliver an urgent medical message. Upon receiving my father’s reply, he took a sip of water and ran back to deliver it.
Being surrounded by the creatures of the African highlands, and having recently left the plains, I managed an evolutionary perspective on the fact that a man could run a double marathon through the forest — outrunning lions and all that — but barefoot? How could his ankles, knees and hips take the pounding, never mind his feet? The deed was unimaginable to someone who wore leather loafers to work and soft sneakers to the gym.
At that time, I could never have imagined that more than 30 years later there would be a quiet revolution in the way we see

How to Finally Forgive Your Worst Sins

by , under NEWS
How to Finally Forgive Your Worst Sins

We have all done things, or at least thought and imagined doing things, for which we continue to struggle to forgive ourselves. How can we let go and move on so that we can finally love ourselves unconditionally?
I am currently in touch with a man who is doing remarkable work at San Quentin prison teaching yoga and meditation to inmates who are struggling with self-forgiveness. Back in the early ’70s, when I was studying to become a Presbyterian minister at the San Francisco Theological Seminary, I likewise was working at San Quentin, leading a group of 11 seriously intense inmates each week in a two-hour emotional healing group.
I recently wrote about this early therapy-training experience in “Expand This Moment,” because it relates directly to the eighth Focus Phrase, “I honor and love myself, just as I am.” Most of us tend to have some difficulty at first with this Focus Phrase because we have said things and done things in our past that we still have not accepted and forgiven ourselves for, and therefore we can’t really honor and love ourselves — or love other people as we’d like to.
All of the men in my encounter group at San Quentin had killed at least one person. Most of us certainly haven’t done anything like that, but still, there are periods of our past that we feel terribly guilty about, and that we simply don’t

Chances are, you know someone like me who was sexually abused or even raped.
April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. As someone who has experienced firsthand what sexual violence can do to a life, I make every effort to change societal attitudes on this vital topic.
Sexual assault is prevalent in America, just as it is around the world. At some point during her life, at least one of every three women in the

A Little Gratitude for Servers Please and Thank You

As our world continues to go through dramatic changes and shifts, we are all being called to serve. Every one of us has unique and individual ways we can serve others and the planet every day. I believe it is more important than ever to recognize this and to consciously act from a heart-centered place of sincere caring and concern.
My wonderfully spirited daughter Lani, who shines her light out into the world and serves others through her performing talents, also literally “serves” people every day at a family-oriented restaurant in midtown Toronto. From what others have told me, she shines particularly brightly at this, as

Are You a Discriminatory Dater or Just a Victim of Bad Parenting

How many of you, as adults, still live your life according to the rules of your parents? Recently, after one of my seminars, a guy in attendance asked me for my opinion on his situation, and what I heard from him really prompted me to write today’s blog.
He said, “David, the only reason why I came to this seminar was because I am fresh out of a relationship. I was in love with a beautiful woman, but my mother didn’t like her. Because I can no longer date her, I need to go out and find someone else, and I want your guidance.”
I looked at

The Great American Trance

A while back I was talking about Alcoholics Anonymous to someone who’d been mandated to attend a DWI program, and he said with righteous conviction, “I hate A.A. It’s all brainwashing.”
I looked at his Hummer, his expensive, name-brand watch, and then at him. “And you don’t think you’re brainwashed now?” I asked.
He didn’t answer. But as we walked down the street, our conversation was forcibly interrupted by bus-stop billboards, ads stapled to telephone poles, and posters in store windows pushing products that will make us happier, wealthier and more

Human Cooling Global Warming and Childhood Obesity

by , under NEWS
Human Cooling Global Warming and Childhood Obesity

“Bring back that lovin’ feeling!”
–The Righteous Brothers
Are we getting even with an unloving world by taking from Mother Nature and then eating poorly? Tell me I’m wrong about these 22 observations:
Listening has been replaced by lecturing.
Talking with has been replaced by talking at, or worse, talking over.
Thinking has been replaced by reacting.
Being contemplative has been replaced by being bored.
Joy has been replaced by excitement.
Gratitude has been replaced by disappointment.
Taking responsibility for your actions has been replaced with blaming and/or making excuses.
Being loving has been replaced with being resentful.
Laughing with has been replaced with laughing at others.
Happiness has been replaced by fleeting fun.
Kindness has been replaced with irritability and being judgmental.
Fulfillment has been replaced by busyness.
Wisdom has been replaced by smartness.
Patience has been replaced by impatience.
Calmness has been replaced by agitation.
Contentment has been replaced by momentary satisfaction.
Making love has been replaced by having sex.
Giving has been replaced by taking, or even worse, grabbing.
Selflessness has been replaced by selfishness.
Value has been replaced by return on investment.
Human being has been replaced by human doing and worse, human having.
Peace of mind and peace on Earth has been replaced by piece of the action.
If I am not wrong, then what do the items at the beginning of each observation have in common that those on the right that have replaced them don’t? To me, it seems that the ones at the beginning of each observation overflow with being okay with the world and oneself and wanting to give back to the world, while the ones at the end overflow with the idea that something is missing and something is wrong, scarcity and pulling, pushing, taking and grabbing to fill the hole.”
The more you feel or live with those experiences on the right side of the list, the more you will try to consume, buy, take and grab to compensate for it, and doing that heats up the world and leads to global warming (a.k.a. much ado about nothing). More importantly, the more you feel and live with those experiences on the left side of the list, the more you want to give back to the world for those gifts.
How does this relate to childhood (and adult) obesity? Imagine being a child living in a world surrounded by people who behave much more like the descriptions on the right side of the list. Furthermore, imagine being a child who feels frustrated, hurt, upset and/or angry, and that the first thing you need is comfort (not pity, but compassion and TLC) and the last thing you need is a lecture or, worse, being barked at and
