Irans Freefall

Iran’s favorable ratings are in a “freefall” across the Arab World, with Iran’s behavior in Iraq, Bahrain, and the Arab Gulf region being viewed negatively by most Arabs. These are a few of the key findings of an Arab American Institute poll conducted by Zogby International during the first three weeks of June, 2011. The poll surveyed over 4,000 Arabs from Morocco, Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and UAE, and has a margin of error of 3.5% (in Morocco, Egypt and Saudi Arabia) and 4.5% (in Lebanon, Jordan, and UAE).
Back in 2006, Iran was viewed favorably in every one of these Arab countries–and in five of the six Iran received a greater than 80% positive rating. Since then, the decline has been steady and

The Most Important App You Will Ever Have

In our age of amazing technological advancement, where new apps are created daily and we are busier than ever, it is easy to forget the most essential app we have: our own body and mind. In fact, in a recent National Sleep Foundation study, 63 percent of Americans say their sleep needs are not being met during the week. Essentially, the mind/body app often takes a toll in our constantly-connected life.
While we want the newest and coolest app available in the app store, more people are realizing that taking care of themselves amidst an increasingly-connected life is

Failure to Raise the Debt Ceiling is Bad for Business

Failure to Raise the Debt Ceiling is Bad for Business

Headlines have dubbed it “unthinkable,” and businesses small and large have urged
lawmakers for months to agree soon to ensure the country doesn’t default on its debt.
But next week’s August 2 deadline to raise the federal debt ceiling looms, and a recent
deal that could have resolved the issue fell through because some lawmakers couldn’t
abide elimination of special tax breaks used mostly by the most affluent. It’s alarming
that lawmakers have taken the debate so close to the wire, considering the havoc a
default would wreak on small businesses and the economy as a whole.
With each passing day that politicians fail to make a deal, economic uncertainty grows,
shaking the environment for small and large businesses alike. Unfortunately, the clock
is still ticking and that last minute is fast approaching.
There are myriad reasons why we must not default on the debt: skyrocketing interest
rates, an across-the-board credit freeze–essentially total financial collapse. While
much of the debate has focused on big businesses and Wall Street in particular, which
have plenty on the line, small businesses will suffer even more from a

The Karmapa Tibetan Buddhisms Next Great Leader

At first look, His Holiness The Seventeenth Gyalwang Karmapa is intimidating. Well built, self possessed, and with a keen glance, he walks more like a middle weight boxer than one of the most venerated religious figures in Tibetan Buddhism. As he moves around the room, the sly and playful side of his twenty-six year old character flashes occasionally as he teases his capable translator and raises an eyebrow with interest at an hors d’oeuvre nervously presented to him. Later, as he begins to share his perspective on individual spirituality and global concerns, a fully formed figure emerges – that of a powerful young man who is rapidly becoming a world religious

Is The News Making You Crazy Try Thich Nhat Hanhs Being Peace

As I write, our government — that’s Congress, that’s the President — is on the verge of deciding how badly to hurt the sick, the poor and the aged.
I never thought I’d write a sentence like that.
But then, I have never witnessed such institutionalized cruelty before. If current views prevail, we will effectively criminalize misfortune — get fired, become majorly sick, lose your home and you will fall right through the shredded safety net into poverty, misery and premature death. This, in the richest country in the world.
This is not about

John McCain Always Confused Ever for War

Sen. John McCain has exhibited personal courage, but his geopolitical judgment is uniformly awful. Over the last 30 years there has been no war or potential war that he has opposed.
In 2008 he wanted to confront nuclear-armed Russia over its neighbor Georgia, which started their short and sharp

Does Bug Spray Do More Harm Than Good

The weather has been pretty gorgeous lately, and I bet you’ve been heading outside most chances you get. You’ve got your hat and sunglasses on when all of a sudden — slap! — oh hello mosquito!
The thought of stepping out only to become a blood buffet for these insects is almost enough to cancel that outdoor barbecue. Even worse, wear smelly socks (as one recent report suggests) and the mosquitoes will zoom towards you like a pack of flies to Lady Gaga’s meat costume. Every year, about a third of us will rub on five to seven million pounds of repellent in hopes of fending off hungry

Friday Talking Points In The Darkest Depths of Mordor

If I were a hobbit, right about now I would be wondering just how the heck I wound up at the center of this Washington intraparty political fight, personally. What (I would ponder in my metaphorical hobbit hole) had I done to any of these folks to deserve being dragged into this fracas?
It all started with a Wall Street Journal editorial, believe it or not. That’s how far into Fantasyland we’ve traveled — the most eminent conservative newspaper in the country had to reach back to J.R.R. Tolkien to explain what is currently going on in Washington:
Since then, the hobbit moniker has been tossed around within Republican circles (and on the floor of the Senate, from none other than John McCain) with abandon.
But you know what? I’m going to take a

Its Time to Suck It Up and Pay Our Bill

Working here in Rome the last two weeks has been a welcome break from the heat back home in New York, not to mention the sound of alarms going off throughout the U.S. media about the impending debt ceiling debacle. Reading websites and blogs about the possibility of the US defaulting on its debts for the first time in history, I’m reminded of the Clinton impeachment fiasco, which I also watched through the prism of overseas media while I was in South Africa for an extended trip in 1998.
In the short 13-year period since Clinton’s great troubles, little of that partisan disgrace has figured much in the lives of its principal

Linking the Past and the Future Legacy Writing

For whatever cultural or natural reasons, at a certain time in our lives we become aware of a deep yearning for our family roots. Some of us, because we are a nation of immigrants, make pilgrimages far from home to walk the land our forefathers and foremothers did. Others of us rely on reading, family reunions, communicating through and searching the internet to connect to our past.
August, this month of abundant natural harvest of delicious fresh fruits and vegetables, is synchronous with harvesting the fruits of our relationships — especially with those who have helped us grow, who nurtured and mentored

Governing Together The Debt Limit Is an Ideal Opportunity

Governing Together The Debt Limit Is an Ideal Opportunity

There is a saying that is widely popular among conservatives: “The government that governs least governs best.” The current class of Republican legislators in Washington is taking it to a whole new level: “The government that doesn’t govern at all governs best.” John Boehner has tried his best to govern, but as he told his Conference in locker room language, you can’t lead without any followers.
So, with the leadership of both parties backed into a corner, we are left with one option to end the impasse and avert untold and unknown consequences on Tuesday, an option that would be a first of its kind event in this Congress and a first of its kind event in the Obama Presidency: a bipartisan vote in the House for a major piece of legislation.
To date, Democrats and Republicans in the House have not joined one another in a single major piece of legislation since President Obama took office. Not one. Stimulus package? No

Driven to Change

Today, President Obama and U.S. automakers announced the latest phase of fuel economy standards, moving to 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025. This big win for consumers will result in a total savings of 3.5 million barrels of oil a day by 2030 compared to what we would have used before my 2007 law to increase fuel economy standards was implemented. These fuel efficiency standards strike at the heart of the oil cartel that has held America in a stranglehold for decades – restricting our economic growth, threatening our national security and poisoning our environment. For families and businesses that have been punished by high gas prices at the pump, today’s announcement is welcome sign of relief and an indication that in the future America's energy policy will be driven by innovation and technology.Getting here wasn’t easy.It took 32 years for Congress to act again to boost car fuel economy standards and consumers paid the price. University of Michigan researchers found that in 2006 cars were only getting about three more miles to the gallon than vehicles did in 1923!As fuel efficiency standards stagnated, oil imports tripledbetween 1985 and 2005, ballooning to 12.5 million barrels per day.It was a national

Higher Peace

From July 25 through July 30, anti-poverty advocacy group ONE is joining 10 bloggers who are making their way through Kenya to see what life is really like for moms in the developing world. Follow along and check their progress at One.org/us/actnow/moms.
Oasis is one of the first words that comes to mind when visiting Amani Ya Juu, a sewing and training program for African women who are marginalized and often broken.
Fleeing from war-torn countries and desperate home and personal circumstances, Amani Ya Juu, started 25 years ago in a small room in Nairobi, today provides for women from virtually every corner and culture on the continent nothing short of transformation. Where women once found no options, Amani Ya Juu, by teaching women skills in sewing, quilting, design, beading, batik and bookkeeping, is a source of both income and a way to heal.
Petroniia, until a few years ago lived a dire life in Mombasa. Rejected by her family, she suffered at the hands of her relatives and the streets.

Student Aid Teeters in the DebtCeiling Debate

As I watched the seemingly endless debt-ceiling drama in the U.S. House of Representatives unfold last night on CNN, I wondered if I was witnessing a moment in higher-education history that one day might be recalled as the point when short-term political gamesmanship won out over the country’s long-term economic success.
If you’ve been following the debt debate in Washington, you know that, as of this minute, there are two competing proposals — one in the House, one in the Senate — to raise the debt ceiling by next week. Both would cut spending over all, but both also include a provision that would actually raise spending to deal with shortfalls in the Pell Grant program for the next two years ($17-billion in the House plan and $18-billion in the Senate plan).
It seems that the provision has been a big stumbling block in getting conservative Republicans to back any debt-ceiling plan. “I really don’t understand why we’re increasing spending in a bill [that's] supposed to be cutting spending,”

74 wrongs do not make a legal right. Since 1962, 74 debt ceiling bills have been passed by Congress and signed into law by eight different presidents. Each debt limiting act was unconstitutional.
Section 4 of the Constitution’s 14th Amendment states: “The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payments of

The Fight for Truth and Justice

If Superman lived today, would he still choose to be a journalist?
It would be a tough decision. For a profession that is supposed to be about the fight for truth and justice, it has taken an almighty battering in recent weeks.
The revelations around The News of the World’s criminal activities would have been like Kryptonite to the Man of Steel. This is not what Clark Kent, or thousands of his fellow journalists around the world, signed up for.
The closing down of the paper would hardly have appeased our shrewd superhero friend. After all, when super-villain Lex Luthor came under fire by the Daily Planet, he took over the paper and subsequently shut it

Everybody Eats Where Everybody Shops Where Everybody Lingers Where In Richmond Upon Thames Petersham Nurseries and Petersham House

Petersham Nurseries is only a 20-minute train ride from the center of London in the lovely town of Richmond upon Thames, but it seems a world away in actuality. Who knew that heaven was waiting for me here on earth? Francesco and Gael Boglione, who created this enchanting escape hatch from reality, have been written about ad nauseum, but in my opinion they are worth every word. Then you ask, why would I want to write more, and if so, what more do you say about a sexy Italian ex-pat and a beautiful Australian gal who planted themselves on the banks of the river Thames to set about cultivating the culinary and botanical scene of Richmond in more ways than one?
I have known Francesco for more than 30 years. Yes, since I was but a mere

The Great WakeUp Program Is It Possible To ReSet Your Biological Clock

Your Biological Clock And Sleep
Monitoring your exposure to light is one of the easiest — and most effective — ways you can improve your sleep. Light plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy sleep and wake cycles because of its powerful influence on our biological clocks. This is why Lark Coaching contains tips about when to get bright light and when to avoid bright light.
Your Biological Clock
Your body’s clock, or body clock, is the time-keeping system inside you that controls your natural 24-hour sleep and wake cycle (also known as your circadian rhythms). It determines the timing of your daily activities, like when you should be eating, working, exercising and sleeping.
If you follow your body clock’s commands, you will find it easier to accomplish what you

Joe Simon Creator of Captain American and a living legend

With the release of the incredibly well-put together, amazing, thrilling Captain America movie, I think it’s time to take a look at one of the unsung heroes of the character. Joe Simon created Captain America (along with Jack Kirby) and he’s a living legend. Not many people remember his name since it was Stan Lee (another living legend) who revitalized the character in the 60s, again with Jack Kirby.
He released his autobiography this year (Joe Simon: My Life in Comics) and I have to say after reading it you get the feeling that comics today would not be the same without Joe
