New Obama Immigration Policy is Neither New Nor a Solution to Americas Immigration Fiasco

The Obama Administration’s announcement that it would review, on a case-by-case basis, the approximately 300,000 pending deportation cases in immigration courts to weed-out non-criminal immigrants and focus on deporting felons was greeted with both high praise and wild alarm.
A wave of celebration broke out yesterday among undocumented kids and their supporters as the relentless Federal deportation campaign has seemingly been stopped.
Meanwhile, anti-immigrant groups, coming off their successes at enacting racist, anti-immigrant laws in Arizona, Georgia and Alabama, proclaimed the end of the Republic.
They’re both wrong in their respective celebrations and lamentations.
For the Dreamers, the national group of star students, brought to the United States as undocumented children, now seeking to fully join American society through service in the armed forces or by attending college, this new policy feels like a tremendous

Advice for the Candidates New Republican Primary Narrative to Take Shape

A new Republican primary narrative may be taking shape in the coming weeks and here is how it could play:
Rick Perry is having significant impact on the race and while he may scare some moderate Republicans, he knows how to fight and is attracting the base. Can we win the nomination? You bet.
Perry threatens both Michelle Bachmann and Mitt Romney but Bachmann will be in serious trouble in the coming months maintaining her traction with a competitor like Perry stealing her spotlight. And Perry is more electable than Bachmann is in a general. Bachmann simply cannot win the general election against Obama and the primary voters know

Breastfeeding Our Countrys Lactation Intolerance

A month ago a breastfeeding doll from Europe made a controversial splash in the U.S., erroneously accused of “sexualizing” children. A week ago the CDC issued a report that hospitals don’t support nursing mothers. And yesterday, a teacher in Colorado claimed she was fired for pumping on the job.
Our medical institutions are in agreement that breastfeeding provides significant health benefits to babies and

These 8 Books Could Save Your Marriage

What does it take to stay married to one person, under one roof, for the rest of your life?
I was so interested in that question that I wrote a book attempting to answer it. Over the course of my research, I interviewed 200 women who had been married 15 years or more — sometimes many, many more — about how they sustain their relationship. Though these wives came from diverse backgrounds and described themselves in varying stages of marital joy or distress, the strategies they shared for going the matrimonial distance were strikingly similar:
-Have close women friends and men friends with whom to vent (and drink).
-Have a strong sense of self beyond your marriage. Longterm bliss is possible if each partner is blissful apart from the other.
Through their raw, real reflections, the women I spoke to helped me better navigate my own 23-year-old marriage, and I’m proud of the book that emerged from my interviews with them, ‘The Secret Lives Of Wives.’
But I also appreciate what good company the book

Support Syrias People

For months now, the world has witnessed an acceleration of deadly violence in Syria, as the Assad government has resorted to increasingly brutal methods in an effort to smash a mass uprising in the country. While the government maintains that it has offered the protesters a range of reform proposals, their heavy-handed and lethal repression of largely peaceful demonstrations has called into question the seriousness of their intention to change their approach to governance. Negotiations between the regime and the opposition leading to a transition to democracy may have been possible at one point, but given the harshness of the government’s behavior, that moment has long passed. As a result, the protesters have sharpened their resolve, now demanding that the regime be

To Prank or Not to Prank

The Pranks
When Isa Prevost looked out her window on her birthday she found a “gift” sitting in her driveway, placed there by her ex-spouse Dany Lariviere. Dany had taken it upon himself to dump a 20-ton boulder in front of her house, in her driveway blocking access to same. Spray-painted in fluorescent orange was the following message: “Happy Birthday, Isa” and atop the rock was a pretty pink bow.
Pranks between ex-spouses who are in the process of obtaining a divorce are not a rare

Win with Taxes

Win with Taxes

Why is it that the Democratic Party faithful storming GOP town halls come up with better talking points for the tax debate than their own leaders?
Raising taxes on the rich – or, better said, making them pay what they paid before George W. Bush – is actually a popular notion according to polls, even among Republicans.
But too many Democrats in Washington fear “class warfare” attacks and are themselves so beholden to big money that they cannot muster the winning words that town hall protesters put together.

Kava for Sleep Why It Continues to be a Mystery

Kava for Sleep Why It Continues to be a Mystery

Among “herbal” remedies for sleep, perhaps none has raised more questions over recent years than kava. Concerns about its safety have prompted extensive scientific study — and according to a recent large-scale review, we still don’t have answers to some basic questions about the risks associated with kava use.
In the roughly two decades it has been in popular use in the West, kava — a plant native to the South Pacific — has had a contentious and confusing history. Kava first became popular in the 1990s as an herbal remedy for sleep and anxiety. Within a few years, several cases of liver damage — and in some cases, liver failure — in the United States, Canada and European countries had been linked to kava

Stock Tip Be Worried Workers Are Consumers

Repeat after me: Workers are consumers. Consumers are workers.
We’re slouching toward a double dip, and the stock market is imploding, because consumers — whose spending is 70 percent of the economy — have reached their limit.
It’s not just the jobless who can’t spend. It’s mainly people with jobs. Median wages continue to

Friday Talking Points Phony Vacation Outrage

It’s silly season in the political world, once again. And this year — just like every year a Democrat occupies the White House — an old favorite of a story is making the rounds. It involves some very thinly-veneered outrage, which is completely fabricated and hypocritical in the extreme.
President Obama is on vacation. This fact is being subject to ridicule from Republicans, and their enablers in the

Republicans Biggest Fear Proof That Government Spending Works Destroying Their Brand

The president and the punditry seem perplexed that Republicans vote against their own proposals. The president in particular seems to believe that in a choice between voting for their constituents and exposing their hypocrisy, the Republicans will, in the end, vote for their districts.
That is wrong. Much more importantly, however, it “misunderestimates” Republicans’ devotion to their economic belief system, the alternative reality they constructed to maintain it, and the political, psychological and financial stakes they have invested in it.
When he fashions his jobs bill, therefore, President Obama should eschew calculations of what Republicans might

Chinese People Should Listen to Their Hearts Not the Propaganda of the Chinese Communist Party

The Chinese people have the great fortune of possessing a long and illustrious civilization. Their achievements in science and the arts are a legacy that Chinese people should be rightfully proud of; however, in contemporary China the Han Chinese people share some of the same misfortunes as the Uyghur people of East Turkestan. They do not enjoy the privilege of electing their leaders, opposing the party-state or living in communities governed by the rule of law.
As the Chinese Communist Party shows no interest in governing through the will of the people, I believe that it is up to Han Chinese and Uyghur people themselves to seek a democratic future and to find permanent solutions for deep-rooted problems between

Earth Preaching

Believing that the Earth is our god, government, economy and culture — all wrapped into one big institution — that is simple common sense! When we draw our last breath together, all the functions of living will be mixed together in that one breath. There won’t be separate powers anymore.
Alarmist? Pessimistic? Radical? Are things so bad?
It’s not so bad if you ignore the upheavals and century storms and waves of extinctions. Most of us haven’t made a decision about what do to. The climate is changing and we get through another day.
Individuals in the media-saturated West have mostly made the decision to make no

Skeleton TurnKey

Skeletons in the closet? Try skeletons in the floorboards, or beneath them. In recent news the house for sale on the island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea going for 4.1 million Swedish kronor, or about $650,000, complete with visible skeleton in the cellar floor (Goths, eat your tell-tale heart out!), got me thinking about full disclosure laws for real estate. Should owners be required to disclose to potential buyers if their house is haunted?
Every state has its own laws regarding full disclosure of known deaths. In California, sellers are required to notify buyers if a death has occurred on the property within the last 3

Thich Nhat Hanh and David Suzuki in Conversation About the Health of the Planet

Thich Nhat Hanh and David Suzuki in Conversation About the Health of the Planet

Despair and anger are contributing to a feeling that people have no power to stop the destructive forces behind climate change, but the feeling can be reversed through personal hope and inner peace, an audience in Vancouver was told earlier this week by Buddhist monk, poet, peace and human rights activist, Thich Nhat Hanh.
In Vancouver for a week of teaching and lectures, Thich Nhat Hanh, sat down with Canada’s David Suzuki, a world-renowned authority on sustainable ecology, to discuss the path forward to a more sustainable way of living.
Their conversation, based on the premise that it is well-known that humans are harming the earth, destroying its ecosystems and disrupting the climate, focused on how to bring about the change in human behavior that is needed to put the world on a path that will ensure a healthy planet for future generations.
With contributions to the discussion from Vancouver’s mayor, Gregor Robertson, the audience listened for an hour to a thoughtful dialogue on tackling attitudes to climate change. The following clips provide a snapshot of the discussion. They will also be featured on the David Suzuki Foundation website and Plum Village, Thich Nhat Hanh’s website. A full version of the event is available for viewing

Cut the Defense Budget Please

Cut the Defense Budget Please

Agreement was reached on the debt ceiling crisis. Big deal, facetiously and, also, actually, for the Republicans actually agreed to cuts in the defense budget.
I worked for three years in Congress, and while that was a long time ago, even then they played that game of charades for political purposes, and we’ve almost lost count now, but, perhaps this exercise in political brinkmanship has occurred 78 times over the past half a century. While this masquerade is just another sign that our government must be broken, odd that only Denmark and the USA adhere to this practice, with the Danish wisely keeping their ceiling so high that it is never an issue. Let’s face it, this time the underlying reason for this drama was that the Republicans are trying to take over the White House by weakening President Barack Obama for the 2012 presidential election.
The primary problem reverts to voters and their total misunderstanding of economic

The report was co-authored with a research team at the Institute for Urban and Environmental Studies led by Dr. Pan Jiahuathe. Equal Pay for Equal Work

Just a few months ago, the Supreme Court made a historical ruling impacting the future of pay discrimination in this country. The court, in a five to four decision, ruled in favor of retail giant Wal-Mart against a group of its female employees. Wal-Mart was facing a possible class action lawsuit on behalf of its female workers who were not promoted and were paid less than their male counterparts for similar work. Not only does the ruling make it more difficult for women, minorities and other discriminated groups to find justice in the courts, it weakens the legal case for equal pay for equal work in this
