This is Only the Beginning Surprising Advice From a Centenarian

My great-aunt Ida loves to say, “This is only the beginning.” Gearing up for her 101st birthday this May, Ida thrives on a daily Coca-Cola, full-bellied laughter, and an abundance of nourishing memories. Ida is remarkable not only for how long she’s lived, but also for how she’s lived: always open to the call to adventure.
Ida was born during the Taft administration, but she’s hip to the times. She lives independently in an apartment complex which mostly houses college students. She’s on top of current events and her celebrity crush is Stephen

The Benefits of Caring for a Pet

No doubt you can still recall your first dog or cat and all the joy they brought into your life. For the young as well as the old, especially if they have Alzheimer’s disease or another form of memory loss, there are many benefits in caring for pets.
I remember one woman who was in her mid-50s and had been diagnosed with younger-onset Alzheimer’s disease. When she first moved to the memory care neighborhood at a senior living community, she had a really difficult time adjusting to her new

America Meet Saul Alinsky the Great Man Newt Gingrich Wants You to Know

In his victory statement in South Carolina, and again in the final Florida debate, Newt Gingrich twice accused President Obama of shaping our country to reflect the ideals of Saul Alinsky. He did so twice in his relatively short address, and he has referred to Alinsky as an undescribed villain at least twice before in his campaign. On each occasion, he has offered us nothing beyond Alinsky’s name, as though he were referring to as well-known a person as, for example, Steven Spielberg or Paula Abdul. He has told us nothing of Alinsky, whether he is alive or dead and, if of this century, American or not, a political leader or a rock star and, above all, why we should go all out to defeat President Obama in order to thwart this unknown villain’s influence over America.
Saul Alinsky’s name is not just one of a long list of villains cited by Gingrich as scheming role models or disciples of the President; he stands

Thanking God for Gay Marriage in Washington State

When Washington state Senator, Mary Margaret Haugen, announced her support for legislation that would clear the way for gay marriage, I was impressed by her courage — not just by her political support on a contentious social issue but by opening the interview with an unqualified statement that she did so as a Christian. Politics is one thing. Supporting gay marriage as an identified Christian is another. That takes real guts.
The coming vote in the Washington state legislature is likely to unleash another round of ‘holy wars’ on lesbian and gay families by those who presume to speak on behalf of God, the Bible, and all “real”

Music Makes Us Who We Are

Music — can words really describe that feeling we get when we listen to it? Not really, but what exactly makes “good music?” Is it the type or the singer or something other element? Whatever it is, we all know it has a great effect on us. However, is a certain type of music better than another? That is exactly where the debate comes in. Some claim country music is better than R&B, while others claim the exact opposite. However, there is one type of music that is criticized a bit too much, especially by people who do not take the time to listen to

Teen Impact Finalist 7

This blog post was submitted as an entry in the Teen Impact contest and awarded as a finalist.
I’m a product of the upper middle class, so the houses I have lived in and visited have always been well-appointed, comfortable, and secure. Working with Habitat for Humanity of Forsyth County has awakened my mind to the sub-standard housing that exists in neighborhoods across the country and across the world. I find it disturbing that in a country as rich and developed as the United States, we still have a vast number of people living in miserable conditions due to lack of affordable

As founder of a national organization, I understand that only 10 percent will lead the 90 percent of my generation. I know I am in that 10 percent, so I created a national campaign, Shake Off Violence, beginning with a 90-day ceasefire. The purpose of the campaign is to raise public awareness about youth violence and to promote peace.
With a 40 percent rise in gang membership and a surge in gun violence, I just got tired of seeing my peers

Icon of the Day In Search of Lost Time With Salon Tea

Nostalgia is making a serious comeback. So while you tell me about your new 4G phone, it won’t be non sequitur that I respond with an exquisite description of my grandmother’s old strawberry and whip cream dessert she used to make my brother and I every Friday night. Your current Super Bowl chit chat will be met with descriptions of my past as a teen in my living room making up various killer dance routines to Shannon’s “Let the music play.”
Ahhhhhh, yes nostalgia sure is making a comeback. Woody Allen makes it the main character in his movie, Midnight in Paris; Urban Outfitters honors nostalgia with the USB turntable, among other throwback products; and Tracy Stern urges us to savor it with her Salon Tea brand.
While Woody focuses on the idea that every generation thinks the previous generation was simpler,

New York Knicks vs Miami Heat Recap January 27 2012 ESPN

Source:Associated Press
__________________________________________________________________________
MIAMI — LeBron James scored 31 points, Dwyane Wade scored 28 in his return from a sprained right ankle, and the Miami Heat beat the 3-point-obsessed New York Knicks 99-89 on Friday night.Chris Bosh scored 13 points and James finished with eight rebounds and seven assists for Miami, which plays host to Chicago on Sunday in a rematch of last season’s Eastern Conference finals.Bill Walker scored 21 points for New York, which took 43 shots from 3-point range, the most in the NBA this season and a total that had the Knicks flirting with Dallas’ NBA record of 49 set in 1996. The Knicks connected on 18 from beyond the arc, Walker making seven of them.

• Heat Index | Daily Dime
Toney Douglas scored 16 points, Landry Fields had 14 and Amare Stoudemire finished with 12 for New York, which tried more 3s than 2-point shots (41).Wade shot 11 for 19 from the field in his return, after missing six games with the ankle issue. The Heat were outscored 54-6 from 3-point range, but held the Knicks to 36 percent shooting and only 18 points in the final quarter.New York played without Carmelo Anthony, who expects to miss at least two games while dealing with ankle, thumb and wrist problems. Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni said Anthony would not return before Tuesday, so barring a change of plans that would rule him out of New York’s game at Houston on Saturday.Wade and James went on a highlight display in the first quarter, setting each other up for dunks in the opening minutes and combining for five slams in Miami’s first seven field goals. Wade showed no rust from his layoff, scoring eight points in the first nine minutes.Miami went to the rim. The Knicks stayed outside — way outside.D’Antoni said before the game that the Knicks simply had to manufacture more offense, especially now that Anthony will be sidelined for at least the next few days.Hence, the game plan — shoot 3s, and shoot them in bunches.Of New York’s first 33 shots, 19 were from 3-point range. That’s right: The Knicks had exactly two 2-pointers in the first 15-plus minutes. Over a stretch of nearly 6 minutes in the first half, the Knicks had 13 consecutive 3-point attempts, nothing inside the arc.Desperate times, desperate measures, perhaps.By halftime, the Knicks had tried 23 from long range — the most in the NBA this season and the most ever in a first half against Miami.Walker’s season high had been 15 points. He got there early in the third quarter on Friday, part of a wild personal burst in which he scored nine points in 69 seconds to give the Knicks a 62-58 lead. He connected on three 3-pointers, banking in the last one from 27 feet, talking animatedly to no one in particular after each one.The Knicks were so committed to the 3-pointer that on one possession midway through the second half, the 7-foot Chandler had the 6-foot-4 Wade posted up, and kicked the ball to Walker for a corner 3 anyway. A few moments later, Chandler had Wade alone in the post again, no one else within about 3 feet of them, and still didn’t get the ball for what likely would have been an easy score or at least trip to the foul line.By the time the Heat made their first 3-pointer of the night late in the third quarter, New York had made 14 — a surreal 42-point discrepancy.New York’s plan nearly worked. In the end, the Knicks simply did not have an answer for Wade.He missed in the lane with 7 minutes left, but tipped in his own rebound for a seven-point lead, Miami’s largest of the night. About 2 minutes later, Bosh got the ball to James in transition as Wade called for a lob — which James perfectly provided for a two-handed dunk and an 88-79 edge that left the Heat firmly in control.Game notes Celebrities were everywhere, especially from the baseball world. Alex Rodriguez sat courtside with Heat CEO Nick Arison, while Miami Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria and one of his former players Miguel Cabrera — soon to be Detroit’s third baseman — chatted at halftime. Also in the crowd was former Knicks coach and current Florida International boss Isiah Thomas. … Miami PG Norris Cole was bloodied after getting struck near his left eye in the first half. He returned to play. … Knicks C Tyson Chandler was back in the building for the first time since helping Dallas win the NBA title in Miami in June. “Good memories and good vibes,” said Chandler, who was staying in the same hotel and ate breakfast Friday in the same spot he did during the Mavs’ run last season.

Chuck Finale Recap Saying Goodbye To The Buy More

Don’t read what follows unless you’ve seen the series finale of NBC’s “Chuck”
“Chuck, tell me our story.”
Wasn’t the answer Sarah got so much better than an upload from Intersect glasses?
I’ll go on record right away as saying that I was very pleased with the “Chuck” finale, and I think the last 30 minutes of the final episode ranks up there with the absolute best the show has ever done. It got dusty in my house many times during those last two hours, and as a sustained, well-earned sentimental farewell, the finale was everything I could have hoped for.
I needed to be convinced, however. When last week’s episode ended with Sarah’s memories gone, I was alarmed (even though I thought “Chuck Versus the Bullet Train” was a good

Im Sorry Not

Stop apologizing for things you’re not really sorry for.
Sorry to bring up a touchy subject as we kick off a new year — oh, wait… no, I’m not! As the warmth of the holidays fades and winter deepens, many of us take time to reflect on, and even attempt to change, unhealthy behavior. To further the discussion, I began this column with the word I’d like to explore: “Sorry.” Are you really sorry when you say you’re sorry, or are you big enough to actually apologize only when a real apology is due? Are you compulsively apologizing or compulsively anti-apology?
On one extreme of the apology spectrum, I have witnessed far too many women in self-defense classes who, even as they kick or strike the padded mock assailant, say, “Sorry.” Please understand these women have paid their hard-earned money to learn how to defend themselves verbally and physically, have allocated significant time from their busy lives to do so, and the first word that pops from their mouths is “Sorry.”

The Republican Approach to Foreign Policy Less Is More

In November 2008, President Obama’s election was celebrated not just in the United States but around the world. Crowds in Berlin cheered in the streets while Kenya declared a national holiday after Barack Obama. The president of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, sent his congratulations, saying it was “time for a renewed commitment between Europe and the United States.” United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon called the election an “historic opportunity” to strengthen the relationship between the United States and the United Nations.
Obama’s presidential campaign had impressed global leaders and people the world over with its rhetoric of open engagement and its vow to bring the U.S. back to a time where it was held internationally as a responsible superpower standing up for its values and the interests of

Tinker and Change the World

by , under NEWS
Tinker and Change the World

Tinkering — that hands-on, garage-based tradition which sparked inventions ranging from the airplane and electric light bulb to the Apple computer — is making a comeback among average Americans, promising to change our lives for the better on several fronts.
Known by such monikers as DIY (Do It Yourself) and the Maker Movement, its resurrection, fueled by the current economic downturn and the falling cost of high-tech tools and materials, stands not only to boost innovation and change how science is taught in the classroom, but could herald a new industrial revolution, suggest the Economist, the Wall Street Journal and other luminaries.
The potential power of this movement is indeed thought-provoking. It rests on DIYers (who range from young students to everyday adults) believing that the average person has the ability to understand and apply technology in ways like never before, enabling ordinary individuals to build, even invent, meaningful creations of their own that they are passionate about — from robots and sophisticated LED (light emitting diode) systems for movie film production to energy-smart conveniences for the home.
Through robust support networks that they’ve developed nationwide, DIYers delight in joining with like-minded friends, mentors and peers (either online or in-person) to tinker, create, hack and re-use materials, while learning to use such tools as computer-controlled table saws, 3-D printers, welding equipment and laser cutters to produce prototypes of their creations.
For me, as founder and chief organizer of the

Friday Talking Points SOTU Review

Well, that was an eventful week in politics, wasn’t it?
On the Republican side, we’ve endured two more of a seemingly-unending series of televised debates between the candidates. Newt Gingrich did not physically attack either Mitt Romney or a member of the media, for which we can all be thankful. The deep and pressing issue-of-the-day seriously discussed was putting a manned base on the moon — which will come as a relief to the legions of voters who have been clamoring for this crucially-important subject to be adequately debated in public.
Sigh. Seriously, you just can’t make this stuff up,

“If you want children to keep their feet on the ground, put some responsibility on their shoulders.” — Abigail Van Buren
Do you feel kids today are as responsible as kids a generation ago?
This recent conversation with a mom opened my eyes to this age-old concern:
Mom: Are your girls excited about the new high school?
Me: Yes, very. In fact, they started in the new building this week and love it already. More room, shiny walls and floors, and no going outdoors to get to the next class (the old school was open campus)… what’s not to love!

This week, ten movies were nominated for Best Picture by the Academy of Motion Pictures. Many media critics have pointed out that the nominated movies notably harkened back to an older Hollywood. We aren’t nostalgic for a bygone era … we are, Hollywood movie-wise, stuck in a bygone era: the representation of men and women, both in front of and behind the camera, is actually exactly the same as it was in

Look at the latest GOP polls coming out of Florida. It appears that Mitt Romney is slowly pulling away from Newt Gingrich, opening up a 9-point lead in the most recent poll, with just four days left before next Tuesday’s critical, winner-take-all primary.
