Liberals Celebrating Breitbarts Death Should Rise Above Such Nonsense

Many friends and colleagues asked today about my thoughts on the sudden and shocking death of conservative blogger and activist Andrew Breitbart. My reaction first amounted to surprise and condolence and has grown to include disappointment with the less-measured and indecorous reaction from some progressives.
While several on the left, including Huffington Post co-founder Arianna Huffington, offered respectful condolences, others took to Twitter to celebrate the news. It’s unfortunate, unproductive, and unnecessary.
To be clear, I can’t think of any issue on which Breitbart and I shared common ground and I disagreed not only with his politics but his tactics. He certainly had an enviable sense of humor and his passion and commitment to his cause was admirable, but his incendiary rhetoric did little to brighten the tone of political discourse and encouraged others who have breathed a similar brand of contempt without possessing the same smarts.
However, I caution progressives who take any measure of joy or even relief in such sad and tragic news to call to their better

The Infuriating Inexcusable AIG Tax Deal

If you believe that the Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street would only join forces “when hell freezes over,” then start building your ark. American International Group, the infamous insurance company that got $85 billion in government bailout money in 2008, and promptly spent $440,000 on a corporate retreat, is going to make your blood boil again.
After receiving a second, equally generous loan in 2009, AIG management had the unmitigated gall to announce that the same executives who insured toxic assets like mortgage-backed securities would get $165 million in “retention bonuses.”
When New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, otherwise known as the “Bonus Buster,” got wind of the payouts, he added AIG to his hit list of companies planning to give executives bonuses even though the firms were saved by TARP bailout

Food Jingles Youll Never Forget

What’s the quickest way to get consumers to remember a product? Write an unforgettable jingle. It’s no secret that putting words to a melody is a tried-and-true way to remember something (teachers have been using this method for years). But some food jingles become so ingrained, in fact, that they become pop-culture icons (Photo Credit: Flickr/Oskay).
Slideshow: 15 Food Jingles You’ll Never Forget
Undoubtedly, hearing the words “Gimme a break” in that familiar tone will cause someone in the vicinity to follow with, “Break me off a piece of that Kit Kat Bar.”It’s a classic example of a food jingle doing its job — making people remember the product.
Slideshow: America’s Best New Sandwiches
Some of the catchiest food jingles in history remained ultra-popular for a few years and then were retired (like the classic tune of Nestl’s Quik,”N-E-S-T-L-E-S, Nestl’s makes the very best”), while others continue to be heard in every commercial for that product (like the Folgers jingle, “The best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup”). Others still have made brief comebacks (like the Big Red jingle, guaranteed “long lasting freshness with Big Red”).
Slideshow: America’s Highest-Grossing Fast-Food Chains
Whether they’re sung in doo-wop-style or to a humming Calypso beat, these iconic food jingles are the ones that stand the test of time, and are impossible to forget from the moment you hear them.

Farm To Fork Across America A Vision of Utopia At EcoFarm Conference

So much for best laid plans! Just before I was to leave for the 32nd Ecological Farming Conference in gorgeous Pacific Grove, CA, an unseasonable heatwave hit County Line Harvest Farm in Thermal, CA, where I’m conducting a bio-nutrient field study. There was an emergency cauliflower harvest — we had to get to it before it bolted in the heat. So from 7:30 am until 3:30 the next morning, I collected pages of data, soil samples, tissue samples, dehydrated roots and flowers, and sent my samples off to multiple labs for tissue analyses.
Then I jumped in the

What’s a fork-in-the-road dish? This is the idea that you can separate out some of whatever you are making and make a simpler version for picky eaters, then continue on your merry way and gussy up the rest of the dish with gutsier ingredients, herbs, seasonings, etc. to give it more oomph for the grownups and adventurous eaters.
This dish is one of the most popular in Thailand, and in Thai restaurants throughout the world for excellent reason. It’s amazing. It’s a quintessential example of the homerun that is Southeast Asian food — a blend of hot and sour, salty and

Think Again Cracks in the Worldwide Murdoch Empire

James Murdoch stepped down from his post as News International executive chairman yesterday morning after details came out about allegations of bribery at The Sun, a tabloid newspaper published by News International in London. This is just the latest in a series of tumultuous events surrounding News Corporation — News International’s parent company, founded by James’s father, Rupert Murdoch.
The Guardian reports that on Sunday, just hours after Rupert Murdoch’s “defiant gamble of launching a Sunday edition of The Sun, the head of the police investigations into illegal behaviour by journalists spelled out startling details of what she called a ‘culture of illegal payments’ at the title.” According to British Metropolitan Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner Sue Akers, one public official was blessed with more than 80,000 ($127,600) in cash payments from the newspaper.
The cases are not about drinks or meals (or even hookers) but ones “in which arrests have been made involving the delivery of regular, frequent, and sometimes significant sums of money” to a “small network of corrupted officials,” according to Akers. In turn, these officials provided The Sun with “salacious gossip,” among other things, including, in former News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks’s case, the use of a police horse.
“There appears to have been a culture at the Sun of illegal payments,” Akers said, “and systems have been created to facilitate such payments whilst hiding the identity of the officials receiving the money.”
Also according to Akers, “retainers” appear to have landed in the pockets of all manner of police officers and other officials — one Sun reporter paid out more than 150,000 ($239,260) over time — in an apparent mutual backscratching arrangement whereby the reporters would get inside information and the officials were free to plant stories in the tabloid that were not checked too carefully. Just one private investigator, Glenn Mulcaire, received more than $1.5 million for his

Boycott Rush

Last week, the House of Representatives held a hearing on access to contraception that included no women. Chairman Daryl Issa denied a Georgetown law student, Sandra Fluke, permission to speak on the absurd grounds that the hearing was about religious freedom, not birth control. After Democrats held their own hearing in which Fluke gave passionate, thoughtful testimony about a friend who lost an ovary because she couldn’t afford the birth control pills that would have reduced her ovarian cysts, Rush Limbaugh apparently felt the need to weigh in and decided to do so in the shameful, loathsome way that only Rush could. As I could never improve upon the words themselves for a distillation of the soul of Rush Limbaugh, here they are:
“What does that make her (Fluke)? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute,” he

Dignity Why I Signed SameSex Marriage into Maryland Law

During the debate in Maryland’s House, I joined same-sex marriage supporters outside of the chambers who were anxiously awaiting the vote. I met two moms and their 4-year-old son Will. After standing for hours, Will was tired and seemed a bit uninterested. I could only imagine how hard it would be to understand the complex discussions as a 4-year-old.
But the next day I saw a photo of Will and his family taken right after the House voted in support of marriage

Drinks To Cure Your Cabin Fever

Spring is still a few weeks away (18 days, not that we’re counting), but we’re tired of waiting.
Unfortunately, we have no control over the weather, but there is one way we know of to make it seem like winter is over: Mix up a tasty summery cocktail.
By using traditional hot-weather ingredients—like strawberries and gin—you can create drinks that capture the season.
Here’s a list of some of our spring favorites to get you in the mood. And soon enough, the sun will be shining brightly. Cheers!

12 Republican Myths That Are Killing Us

12 Republican Myths That Are Killing Us

As the Republican demolition derby rolls on, I continue to be amused by how each remaining contender tries to assume the “small government” mantle.
Mitt Romney wants a government so small that it provides universal health care.
Newt Gingrich wants a government so small that it will establish a permanent base on the moon.
Rick Santorum wants a government so small that it will fit inside a woman’s uterus.
The only real remaining advocate of small government is Ron Paul. Dr. Paul appears to be disqualified from the Republican presidential primary, however, because he is unwilling to drench himself with the blood of our imagined enemies, like Gerard Butler in the movie “300.”
But what about that Jon Huntsman guy? This week three different people told me, quite independently of each other, how sorry they were that Governor Huntsman never gained any traction in the Republican presidential primary.
I told them that they should get over it. Huntsman wasn’t any better.
It somehow counts as an act of courage for Huntsman to have tweeted: “I believe in evolution.” Of course, it would have been more courageous if Huntsman had said that to a Tea Party audience, and then they tore him limb from limb, thereby disproving the theory of evolution right before our eyes.
And evolution is not something that you “believe” or “disbelieve.” Evolution is like gravity; it’s not like Santa Claus or the Abominable

First Nighter Musical Carrie Flickers But Doesnt Flame

For an authoritative comparison between the 1988 Broadway production of the classic flop Carrie and the smaller-scaled MCC revival (revisal?) at the Lucille Lortel, this isn’t the place to look. Sorry to report I’d heard such dire reaction to the previews back in that day, I carefully steered clear of the impending disaster. Therefore, I regret having missed, in particular, the last of the four — count ‘em, four — official performances. The May 15 night is now considered a legendary closing that those lucky enough to have in and on their seats still wax nostalgic over and often use to one-up the less fortunate.
The best I can do is suggest that the revamped version — wherein the raucous Chamberlain, Maine students now wield cellphones — may have been updated and improved by original creators Lawrence

The Higher Health Part 4

One of the most exciting changes that could mean a breakthrough in health centers on the term “mind-body medicine.” Twenty years ago, the equation was definitely body-oriented. If it was conceded that the mind plays a part in health, doctors generally had disparaging things to say about psychosomatic illness and the placebo effect. Neither seemed like “real” medicine, and no medical school curriculum taught otherwise. It was a source of dismay, in fact, that alternative approaches even existed.
What was not realized, as the mind-body connection turned into hard science, is that the polarity needs to be reversed

5 Religious Concepts That Atheists Can Use

Probably the most boring question you can ask about religion is whether or not the whole thing is ‘true’. Unfortunately, recent public discussions on religion have focused obsessively on precisely this issue, with a hardcore group of fanatical believers pitting themselves against an equally small band of fanatical atheists.
I prefer a different tack. To my mind, of course, no part of religion is true in the sense of being

Secure Communities The Real Cost of Failed Immigration Policy

By Jacquie Marroquin
In his 2013 proposed budget, President Obama outlined the administration’s plan to cut $17 million from the failed and expensive 16-year-old 287 (g) program to expand the equally failed and expensive four year-old Secure Communities program. Both programs were created to allow state and local police to check fingerprints of the most violent, dangerous criminals who are booked in jail against federal immigration databases. If there is a discrepancy on the federal database, then local law enforcement must hold the person on a “detainer” until federal ICE agents can find out whether that person is documented or not. They then make decisions about whether or not to put that person into deportation

Oklahoma City Thunder vs Orlando Magic Recap March 01 2012 ESPN

Source:Associated Press
__________________________________________________________________________
ORLANDO, Fla. — During his All-Star Game MVP performance last week, Kevin Durant made Orlando’s Amway Center his personal playground, scoring at will with a barrage of jump shots and easy open-floor baskets. The rims weren’t quite as kind early on during the Oklahoma City forward’s return trip, but he got reacquainted with them late and also got help from fellow All-Star Russell Westbrook to help the Thunder pull out a 105-102 victory over the Orlando Magic Thursday night.Durant scored 38 points, including 18 in the fourth quarter, and Westbrook added 29 points and 10 assists as Oklahoma City erased a 14-point deficit to battle back for the win.Durant’s effort was two points better than his All-Star night and also included five 3-pointers and a 9-for-9 night at the free-throw line — all in a game-high 42 minutes of action. The Thunder’s win was their seventh straight, matching a streak from earlier in the season.”I was so down on myself. I was really going down after the first quarter,” Durant said. “But my coaches and my teammates continued to encourage me and told me they believed in me. It just clicked for me and I started to make a few shots and free throws.”Once your teammates give you that confidence, no matter what you feel good, and I was able to make some shots.”The Magic had a chance to send it to overtime in the final seconds, but Jason Richardson’s long 3-pointer bounced off the backboard at the buzzer. It was a fitting culmination of a final 12 minutes for the Magic in which they went just 8 for 25 from the field. The Thunder, who struggled to find shots in the first half, finished 10 for 15 in the final period.Dwight Howard scored 33 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead all five Magic starters in double figures. But the Magic dropped to 0-2 against the Thunder this season, following their season-opening loss at Oklahoma City on Christmas night.Howard said there wasn’t one singular deficiency from his perspective.”It’s both ends,” he said. “We have to be able to execute and get stops. That’s the one thing we didn’t do well tonight in the fourth quarter. But it’s a good lesson for us.”After struggling to keep up with the Thunder during the December loss, Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said they would need to limit the Thunder’s opportunities around the rim as well as their free-throw attempts to compete in the rematch. The Magic did a decent job at both in the first half limiting the Oklahoma City, who entered the game leading the NBA with 960 free throw attempts, to just seven attempts at the half. But the Thunder found their way to the stripe in the second half and finished at their season average of 27 attempts. They also clamped down on the Magic’s outside shooting and forced Howard to carry the load, all of which kept Orlando out of rhythm.”We went small,” Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. “I thought that gave us some energy, gave us some juice. I know we would have enough and we did. As the game went on, we got stronger defensively. We got stronger with our intensity.”It resulted in 12 Magic turnovers that produced 12 points for Oklahoma City.Orlando took an 11-point lead into the fourth quarter before turnovers and multiple empty offensive possessions allowed the Thunder to surge to a 93-89 lead with 3:22 to play.Jameer Nelson’s 3-pointer pulled the Magic within 96-94 before Durant’s fifth 3 of the night pushed it back to 99-94.After a badly missed jumper by Kendrick Perkins, Nelson kept the Magic’s momentum going and found Howard for an alley-oop.But Durant stayed hot with a 19-foot jumper that quickly stilled the crowd.Ryan Anderson banked in a 3 in the closing seconds and Daequan Cook missed a pair of free throws with 3.1 seconds left to set up Richardson’s last heave.”There’s no chance to run when your defense is as bad as ours was in the fourth — it’s going to hurt your offense,” Van Gundy said. “The two go hand-in-hand, but we just literally didn’t play any defense whatsoever in the fourth quarter.”It was the Magic who were hot in the opening 24 minutes and took 53-50 lead into the break.Orlando held as much as a nine-point edge, shooting 55 percent (21 for 38) in the half and connecting on six 3s. The Thunder shot 48 percent (20 for 41), but the Magic also limited them to nine fast break points while holding a 24-20 advantage on points in the paint. It helped offset Westbrook’s 17 first-half points, with Anderson pacing the Magic with 10 points.”We’re getting better, man, we’re getting better,” Durant said. “Playing against a great team like this at their place. Being down 11 going into the fourth. We could have easily just given in. But we kept playing, kept fighting, and guys made plays. It’s a big-time win for us.”Game notes The Thunder improved to a Western Conference-best 14-6 on the road this season. … Magic F Quentin Richardson sat out his second straight game with a strained left Achilles tendon. … Orlando was the first NBA city to celebrate a Noche Latina (Latin Night) game on Thursday. The Magic wore special El Magic jerseys to coincide with several other Latin-themed arena activities. Six other NBA cities will have Noche Latina throughout the month.
