Saving the Satos Stray Dogs

Recently, I was given the chance to see a documentary called 100,000. It is directed by Juan Agustn Mrquez and shows the tremendous problem with stray and abandoned dogs in Puerto Rico. The name of the film refers to the estimated number of homeless dogs living in the streets of Puerto Rico. The documentary will bring tears to your eyes when you see the horrible conditions these dogs live

Saving Animals Through Advocacy

Few causes are able to unite people such as Lorenzo Borghese from ABC’s The Bachelor, actors Bo Derek and John Corbett, school children and animal welfare organizations, but all of these people and groups got together last week to participate in the “Horses on the Hill” event on Capitol Hill. The ASPCA was proud to co-host, along with the Animal Welfare Institute and The Humane Society of the United States, this event in which we publicly urged legislators to stop our nation’s horses from being slaughtered at home or abroad.
Killing American horses for human consumption is simply not acceptable. The ASPCA’s founder, Henry Bergh, loved all animals, but initially focused his efforts on stopping horse abuse.

Taste Test Chips And Salsa

In honor of the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo on Saturday, Food & Wine editors tasted over 25 kinds of tortilla chips and just as many varieties of jarred salsa to create this buying guide. While there are many fantastic chips on the market, processed salsas didn’t fare as well, with tasting notes like “Stale spice flavor” and “Wish it had salt and tomatoes didn’t taste rotten.” Fresh salsa is easy to make, but in case you do prefer to shop for it, we’ve included a few brands to look for below.

Why High School Doesnt Count Getting Smart About College

As the wounds of college rejections are still raw from April’s thin-or-thick envelope onslaught, all over America, the reality of plan B’s are slowly starting to settle in. For many students whose quest for acceptance to top tier colleges was launched by their parents, from enrollment in elite preschools to language immersion programs, the realization that they spent the majority of their youth building a college application leaves a sense of bitter disillusionment at the very system to which they dutifully attempted to master. They might bemoan their fate, tossing out the glossy posters and brochures from the universities that denied them and decry unfairness at the painfully cut-throat process, the barrage of applicants and the limited number of available slots. But the sad truth is that this December, with polished personal essays in hand, a new senior class will repeat the heartbreak and drama all over

Your Strategic Plan Dead or Alive Nine Ways to Make It Live

Your Strategic Plan Dead or Alive Nine Ways to Make It Live

“There are two schools of thought about strategic planning,” said a consulting mentor of ours many years ago. “One holds that it’s a waste of time; the other that it’s the most important thing you ever do.”
“Here’s the kicker,” he continued, “they’re both right.”
It sounded enigmatic then; now we know exactly what he meant. There’s no point in doing strategic planning just to “punch the ticket.” That plan will wind up in a three-ring binder, gathering dust. But going about it the right way and being serious about the result can buy you a critical organization asset: an articulated framework of ideas that rationalizes everything you do and results in greater focus and synergy across your entire

Were Having the Wrong Debate About Student Loan Interest Rates

Congress seems on its way to approving legislation that would prevent, at least for one year, a doubling of interest rates on college loans taken out by students from low- and moderate-income families. And that’s a good thing. Combined with projected tuition increases this fall, the interest-rate jump, as scheduled (from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent), would drive college costs up by 20 percent for these borrowers.
But only in the crazy world of federal budgetary politics can protecting a 3.4 percent interest rate feel like a victory. After all, the Federal Reserve lends money to commercial banks at a discount rate that currently stands at 0.75

A Prosecutor Sets His Sights On the Johns

Fourteen men appeared in New York State Supreme Court in Manhattan on Monday, charged with patronizing a prostitute, after a crackdown on a brutal sex trafficking ring run by a father and son team from Pennsylvania.
This is one of the few high profile cases across the country in which the johns as well as the traffickers have been indicted, and I applaud the Manhattan district attorney, Cyrus R. Vance Jr., for his leadership.
By arresting the alleged johns as well as the pimps and the six taxi drivers who are accused of finding customers and ferrying them from place to place, the

Jan Gehl Cities for People VIDEO

Architect and urban designer Jan Gehl has dedicated a significant proportion of his career to making cities better places for people by studying public spaces and their impact on civic society.
As a Professor of Urban Design in the School of Architecture at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, he has taught and consulted on the subject internationally for some 50 years teaching and working in Edinburgh, Toronto, Melbourne, London and New York.
Gehl’s consultancy, based in the heart of Copenhagen, is, like the man himself, a friendly and welcoming place. Crane.tv met Gehl there to discuss the importance of urban design in for modern society.
Gehl comments on the rapid expansion of cities, particularly over the last 50 years, where there was little to no concern for the inhabitants. He talks about the moment when people looked back and realized they had forgot about the people.
An ideal setting for a discussion on improving the livability of cities, Copenhagen has become a city others strive towards — and Gehl has arguably played a crucial role in city’s transformation into a city for people.

The New Kid on the Block Austyn Weiner Student at the Parsons School of Design Breaks into the New York Art Scene

Let me proudly introduce to you all who I believe will one day, be credited with creating the most iconic images of our time: twenty-two year old student, Austyn Weiner. Born and raised in Miami, Florida, Austyn began pursuing her artistic goals, professionally years before entering college. Her college experience was not your average one school, four years, and classroom-teacher-based learning environment. She has, however, somehow learned to do what both she and her fans love her for: create powerful, endearing, and stimulating artwork that signifies our culture, society, and generation, as it exists and evolves today.
Not only have I viewed Austyn’s art as an outsider, someone completely and constantly captivated by her visual presentations, but I have also had the exquisite honor of knowing Austyn

A Visit to Uganda Changes Everything

To say that my trip to Uganda was life-changing would be too simplistic. After traveling from California half way around the world to meet our sponsored families face to face, it’sdifficult to express just how much the experience has changed our lives.
Our entire family is passionate about the children we sponsor, but only one of us could go and visit. Thanks to a mobile phone, Skype and my iPad, I was able to take my family with me and also connect our sponsored children to my family back home. By posting photos, short videos and updates to Facebook during the week, I was also able to bring along all of the other ChildFund sponsors who were following the trip.
Now that I’m back from Uganda, my family has begun re-evaluating our entire

Dont Believe the Hype on Corporate Bribery

In a rousing speech last fall in Washington, D.C., Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer called “fighting corruption around the world” a current “top priority” of the Department of Justice. He described how the Justice Department uses the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which criminalizes bribes to foreign officials and shoddy records and controls, as a crucial weapon in that mission. He spoke movingly about how festering small-time corruption caused a young Tunisian man to set himself on fire, igniting the protests that led to the Arab Spring.
Back at home, tales of foreign corruption and bribery have dominated the business

Eat More Move Less Whats Driving the Obesity Epidemic

Like many Americans, I used to think that overweight people simply needed to eat less and move more. I thought that would solve their problem and our national obesity epidemic. However, I’ve come to understand that we have less control over our waistlines than we think. In fact, many of the choices we make are influenced by forces we have not fully understood until

Turn the Lights All the Way Up

Americans care about the food we eat and feed our families, now more than ever. In the span of just a few weeks, “pink slime” became a consumer phenomenon, leading to the unprecedented rapid-fire removal of the product from major stores and schools, the closure of production plants and USDA approval of voluntary labeling. Talk about legislation through retail.
It’s not just ammonia in beef. Consumers are largely in the dark when it comes to how our food is produced — whether it’s artificial growth hormones in milk, antibiotics, Benadryl and other drugs in meat or genetically engineered ingredients hidden in processed

Imagine That

During a meeting last month with our elementary school to discuss my six-year-old daughter’s progress, I chimed in about the great amount of detail in a drawing that accompanied a story she wrote about our family’s weekend activities. None of the other kids illustrated their accounting of the weekend, which was the assignment. My comment was brushed aside like an irksome mosquito whizzing by an unwelcoming ear. The counselor moved on to my daughter’s math evaluation.
“I know we’ve been discussing her progress in reading and math but how is creativity being measured,” was the question I wedged into the conversation.
“It’s not,” was the counselor’s precise response, which came with the backdrop of creative scores elementary school children consistently dropping in the US since

Acts 82640 Castrating Our Customs

Some people call them “thin places,” locations where the gulf between heaven and earth narrows and we fully sense God’s presence. Many people find these thin places in nature. Others discover them in the familiarity of a favorite book, a worshiping community, or a touching song. Though these thin places are inherently unpredictable, we can aid in their
