Future Meet Past A Midcentury Remodel Comes to Life

How often does an architect get the opportunity to renovate his very first project forty-nine years later? For Bill Morrow, it was like stepping into a time machine, only this time with greater knowledge, a bigger budget, and more materials to work with.
It all started when artist/photographer Margot Mandel set out to hire an architect to remodel her mid-century home in Woodland Hills. She had already interviewed four candidates and had given up on finding someone to carry out her vision when she remembered an incident from eighteen years earlier. A stranger stopped by the house and as she walked through the door, she said, “I know this house. I grew up here.” She then relayed how her father, Bill Morrow, designed and built the home in

The Outnets Stephanie Phair on Pitching Last Seasons Wares to a Sartorially Savvy Shopper

As if the advent of Net-A-Porter wasn’t boon enough to fashion lovers, its offshoot, The Outnet, has brought a whole other level of good cheer to online shoppers. Namely, you can get that same roster of well-edited designers from Net-A-Porter at steeply discounted prices on The Outnet. At the helm of The Outnet is Stephanie Phair, a Conde Nast and online retail veteran with an instinct for creating buzz online.
The Outnet’s roster of designers is impressive, discount or not. “Azzedine Alaia, Balmain and Marni are popular because they are so hard to find at a discount,” Phair told Nandini D’Souza, a regular contributor to The Inside Source, eBay’s digital style

Andrea Linett Still Wears A Sweater From Sassys Kurt Cobain Cover PHOTOS VIDEO

One of Andrea’s “claims to fame” is that she styled the infamous Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love cover of Sassy magazine. It is so indicative of Andrea’s committment to heartfelt connections that she chose the same sweater that Kurt wore for that shoot [see Andrea wearing it below], which was her father’s from college, as one of her looks for this one. The sweater is as much a reflection of her taste for edgy classics, as it is for her sartorial coolness and nonchalant grace. In her layers of patchouli and turquoise, Andrea has a gift for choosing the consumate creative influences, but she is one herself.

Tis Better Holiday Gifts that Give Twice

by , under NEWS
Tis Better Holiday Gifts that Give Twice

Studies show that our brains’ pleasure centers light up brighter when we give than when we receive. This holiday season, get your oxytocin fix by shopping these online destinations for altruistic eco-gifts.
For a global array of responsibly produced gifts, eBay’s World of Good delivers. The site’s “Goodprint” section showcases eco-positive pieces and tells the story behind each handcrafted offering. Choices include banana-fiber napkin rings from Kenya ($30) and a bamboo flute from Thailand ($23). There’s also a selection of efficient electronics, including a 12-watt solar-energy kit ($400).
This stocking stuffer should sate the youngsters in your life — but will also improve the lives of less lucky children. The tube of recycled-newspaper coloring pencils (about $8) is available on UNICEF Canada’s robust shopping site. The purchase supports UNICEF’s efforts to protect and educate the world’s most vulnerable children.
How do you gift-wrap random acts of kindness? By buying a themed deck of cards from Boom Boom! The green deck ($10) has 26 easy directives benefiting the environment, such as picking up the next piece of litter you see. Once you’ve completed a good deed, register the card’s unique ID code online, then hand it off to a friend. As others pass it along, you can map the card’s progress online.
We love Blurb. This for-the-people publishing outfit allows anyone with a dream of authoring a book to see it realized. You upload your text and design, then order copies ($5 to $187 each, depending on size). It’s not just another vanity press, however: The site’s philanthropic Blurb for Good section lets wordsmiths and photographers sell their art for a cause. Sales benefit a wide range of human- and animal-rights groups; one cookbook has collected more than $45,000 for Haiti. Love Pelicans ($39) raises money to rehabilitate the birds of the Gulf.
The idea of planting a tree in someone’s name isn’t new, but TreeNex makes it possible to track that tree’s growth online. Its cheery holiday cards ($5.50 each) are 100% recycled, let recipients know that a fir or oak has been planted for them, and provide an online tracking code so they can see the sapling’s planting date, its geographical coordinates, and photos of its nursery or forest.
Here’s a longer list of do-good websites.

Why Your Company Would Never Have Built eBay

by , under NEWS
Why Your Company Would Never Have Built eBay

WINDOWS OR WALLS
When eBay co-founder Pierre Omidyar looked at the auction business in 1995, he saw walls everywhere.
Not just the bricks-and-mortar kind that differentiated stodgy, old-line companies from eBay, Amazon, and other dotcom upstarts, but also the bureaucratic barriers the old guard had erected between buyers and sellers. At venerable auction houses like Sotheby’s and Christie’s, these walls were meant to reassure prospective buyers that the paintings and antiques on offer had been thoroughly authenticated.
But Omidyar recognized that these walls were also stifling the free flow of communication and commerce — a bottleneck that kept the auction houses in a niche market. Even worse, operating under a fundamental mistrust of their own customers actually encouraged fraud and corruption.
Omidyar has been credited for the insight that the auction business could be streamlined online. But his real innovation was far more profound. He designed his company based on the presumption of trust, tearing down the walls between buyers and sellers and replacing them with windows. On eBay’s website, buyers could see sellers directly and rate them for their honesty. Sellers who delivered on their promise got top ratings; those who didn’t quickly were weeded out. By designing for trust, Omidyar actually built a system that was more democratic, more robust–and ultimately more secure.
It was also more valuable. By 2000, the five-year-old eBay’s market cap was $17 billion — 20 times that of the 256-year-old Sotheby’s.
Omidyar was at the vanguard of a new desire for openness among consumers. In the last decade, the hunger for transparency fueled the explosive growth of Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking sites.
The same desire led companies like Zappos.com to post internal emails from their CEO and COO, providing customers a window into their inner sanctum.
And it led companies like Netflix to scrap bureaucratic vacation policies in favor of trust. Today, all of the company’s salaried employees can take off time whenever they want. Nobody tracks vacation days. The company simply assumes employees will keep excess in check themselves.
THE LATTICE VS. THE LADDER
The idea that transparency builds trust has spawned an entirely new form of communication in the workplace. It is a mode that is bottom-up rather than top-down; democratic, rather than authoritarian, and self-policing rather than punitive.
Where once there was a corporate ladder, which defined status, compensation, access to information, and success as a linear climb to the top, today we have a corporate lattice — a model that let’s people to share ideas, innovate, and spread knowledge throughout an organization, regardless of where they fall on the corporate ladder.
In a recent Wall Street Journal article, Alan Murray suggests we’ve reached the end of traditional management structures. “In recent years,” he writes, “most of the greatest management stories have been not triumphs of the corporation, but triumphs over the corporation… The best corporate managers have become, in a sense, enemies of the corporation.”
The reason for this shift, Murray writes, is that bureaucracies are by their very definition resistant to change. “They were designed and tasked, not with reinforcing market forces, but with supplanting and even resisting the market.”
Under Jack Welch, GE grew to be one of the most profitable and valuable companies in the world by constantly revamping and re-imagining their corporate culture.
Netflix, meanwhile, has grown into a $1.6 billion company in a little over a decade. Both CEO Reed Hastings and talent chief Patty McCord have emphasized an openness to new ideas and a willingness to change. “Great workplace is Stunning Colleagues,” Hastings wrote in a recent presentation. “Not day care, espresso, sushi lunches, nice offices, or big compensation.”
Yet even as businesses begin to recognize the value of transparency, they continue to manage their people much as they did 50 years ago. In a rapidly changing universe, most corporate structures remain unchanged. As a result, feedback and communication between management and employees remains artificial and constricted, rather than open and organic.
The rapid innovation companies need to survive can only come by building a culture of change into their very DNA, in the process transforming their businesses into free flowing social networks.
This is how people want to work. It is how they talk to everyone else in their lives. And yet companies feel more secure when there are walls — between employees and managers, between employees and customers, and between employees and each other.
Walls may be comforting. But, as the old-line auction houses learned, the security walls provide an illusion. Companies that tear down walls and embrace trust will attract the best talent in the new century — and thrive in the marketplace.

ReGift Without Fear

ReGift Without Fear

To re-gift or not to re-gift? If you feel that re-gifting is cheap, think again. Being thrifty is being smart. In this economy, re-gifting makes great sense as long as you remove any evidence that the gift was once yours. The last thing you want to do is hurt someone’s feelings. Never try and pass off something as a gift when it’s clearly a donation, a hand-me-down, or something that you don’t think your giftee would like. If you can honestly say that you are not burdening someone with an unwanted item, go for it.
Done correctly, re-gifting can be an art form. Most everyone has recycled a gift or two. The end goal is to make sure that the gift is suitable for the recipient. Gift-giving is about the gratification someone receives from a gift, not whether the item was purchased or passed on.
Re-Gifting FAQ’s
When is re-gifting permissible? Never re-gift within a specific social circle. In other words, make sure the person receiving the gift does not know the friend who gave it to you in the first place.
Can I use the wrapping from the original gift? Never. Choose new wrapping paper and ribbon with a fresh note (make sure to remove the original card). And don’t use packaging marked with the name of a retailer, whether the original source of the gift or not. This could be embarrassing all around if your re-giftee tries to return the gift.
What items should never be re-gifted? Food items, anything used (such as a toaster oven), books that show any sign of wear, and department store gifts-with-purchase.
What about gift cards? Partially used gift cards are a dead giveaway that the gift was once yours, especially if the dollar amount is not an even number.
Should I keep track of who gave me the gift first? It would be embarrassing to give back a bottle of wine to the person who gave it to you in the first place. If you are a regular re-gifter, keep a database to be on the safe side.
Can I sell my gifts on eBay? As the largest store in the world, eBay is the perfect place to sell anything. With your windfall, you could buy new gifts to keep or give away.
What about re-gifting for hostess gifts? Re-gifting is ideal for hostess gifts. Soaps, candles, books, stationery, bottles of wine, or small gifts for children are the perfect way to say thank you.
Should I re-gift to charities? Charities are perfect recipients for re-gifts, and you even get a tax deduction.
Should I ever admit to re-gifting? If the gift is expensive, this is one case where it is socially acceptable. For example, if you went to the opening of an upscale retail store and they gave you a set of bracelets that you’d like to pass on, your giftee would probably appreciate knowing where they came from.
When is re-gifting an especially good idea? If you have friends or family who are “expecting,” why not pass on costly baby equipment that’s just taking up space? In this instance, be up front about the gift.
The Golden Rule of Re-Gifting is that the gift must be new, not used. Always give a gift that you would want to receive, or don’t give at all.

Meg Whitman Treats California Like Some EBay Trinket

Meg Whitman Treats California Like Some EBay Trinket

Meg Whitman truly believes that California is for sale. She has spent a record-breaking $140 Million of her own money in an attempt to buy the state. But California isn’t just some EBay item Whitman can bid on.
Whitman has run 80,000 TV ads to promote her conservative version of a future for California. That one video above is fighting against the, at least, $60 Million Whitman has spent buying up airtime and producing commercials for herself.
What else has Whitman spent her money on in this race? Here are some recent calculations. On staff and spouse travel, lodging and meals: $2,643,529. Fundraising events: $1,028,538. On campaign consultants: $11,085,653. On print ads: $4,247,724. On polling and survey research: $1,254,627.
In all of this tossing of money around like life is a game of Monopoly, Whitman’s true goal is an attempt to buy democracy. She’s acting on a belief that if she throws enough of her own wealth out to woe voters, she can buy their votes. As if California is up for auction and the deciding factor of who wins is who bids enough.
California is not for sale. Please share this blog and the above video with other Californians who cannot be bought.

John Patrick of Organic

by , under NEWS
John Patrick of Organic

Designer John Patrick is arguably one of the most credible eco-designers in the industry.
Since launching John Patrick Organic in 2003, the designer has earned numerous accolades for the line’s long parade of tailored, wearable separates and well-crafted knits, made using wholly organic fabrics and sustainable practices developed on farm collectives.
Sara James Mnookin, a regular contributor to The Inside Source, eBay’s online style magazine, recently spoke with the designer about his 2011 collection, changes in sustainable production over the last few years and his personal collection of works by female photographers, sourced in part on eBay. The following is an excerpt of that story. For the full article and more interviews with fashion insiders, visit The Inside Source.
The Inside Source: You were one of the first high fashion organic lines with real credibility. How has the process of making sustainable clothing changed since you launched the brand?
John Patrick: Sourcing has become more diverse, and I have more options with recycled and up-cycled fabrics. Fashion is actually a very slow process if you look at it carefully. We are in the infancy of the sustainable dialogue.
TIS: What pieces are you most proud of in this collection?
JP: I did a zero waste skirt and scarf using up-cycled and recycled polyester, which is pretty amazing and fun and modern.
TIS: Where is the brand headed next?
JP: Announcements for collaborations and projects will be done at the end of the year. There are several things in the works as far as product. We will go live with our own shopping site in early 2011. It will be all exclusive product for our own site.
TIS: Are you a collector of anything? If so, what?
JP: I collect very little at this stage in my life. I have a small collection of photographs by women: Germane Krull, Debbie Fleming Caffery, Andrea Modica, Margo Dooney. In the past, I have been a voracious collector of 18th century American antiques and vintage clothing.
TIS: Do you use eBay at all? If so, what do you buy?
JP: Recently, I bought about 500 vintage wooden clothespins.
