Reduce Climate Change and Taxes Through Family Planning

There are some universal goals that every US citizen can agree on: less environmental pollution, less catastrophic weather resulting from climate change, a better future for our children. Many people would also like to have lower taxes and smaller government. An important way for us to achieve ALL these goals is through bringing our populations to sustainable levels humanely.
How do taxes and population size connect? One of the insidious effects of population growth is that we create a much greater increase in needs and problems than the proportional increase in population itself — numbers do

Inspired by the Egyptians

Inspired by the Egyptians

We rejoice with our brothers and sisters in Egypt at the news that Hosni Mubarak has resigned – -Egypt has been a big part of the 350 movement from the very first video we ever did, which showed the 350 pennant floating from the pyramids. As you know, we’ve been bringing you their reports from Tahrir Square.
But we rejoice even more at the example they set for the rest of the world, and implicitly for those of us engaged in the climate fight. A real people’s movement — a massive, broad-based, honest movement that doesn’t focus on elites, but instead on the whole population — can move mountains.

You Can Do Better Senator Brown

by , under NEWS
You Can Do Better Senator Brown

I learned last week that Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) is floating the idea of stopping EPA’s work to reduce carbon dioxide pollution for at least one year.
To say that I am disappointed is an understatement. I have known and admired Senator Sherrod Brown for years, and I respect his track record on defending the environment.
Sherrod’s consideration of undermining the EPA’s ability to keep our air free from pollution doesn’t jibe with his past positions or with what’s good for Ohio’s economy and for its residents’ health.
And it certainly doesn’t match up with what I know of Sherrod Brown’s leadership.
I first met Senator Brown when he was in the House and I worked for another member of the Ohio delegation. Both members served on the Energy and Commerce Committee. During the long committee hearings, members often left to attend other events, but Hill staffers had to stick around to

Addressing Climate Change Push the Big Push

by , under NEWS
Addressing Climate Change Push the Big Push

What if there was an affordable plan to improve America’s health, wealth, and national security? Not only America’s, but the world’s. A dream, you say? You bet — an attainable one. The United Nations Division of Sustainable Development developed one in 2009, nicknamed the Big Push. It’s a global and American dream worth fighting for, not just despite but because of the increasing numbers of new Republicans in Congress determined to do little about energy independence or climate change, beyond quoting the bible.
The Big Push is a strategy centered on transitioning humankind to clean energy economically and quickly with three core elements, as Alan Atkisson, CEO of a major consulting firm, explained recently:
Establish feed-in tariff mechanisms globally (that is, guaranteed-purchase price supports for renewable energy),
Invest heavily in renewable energy especially in the developing world through those mechanisms, and
Provide an array of technical and policy support services to speed adoption and implementation.
He notes that doing so would “accelerate the drop in price for renewables dramatically, using the enormous scales of the market for energy in developing countries, who urgently need clean, affordable energy services most,” and points to a successful US precedent: the rapid drop in computer chip prices engineered by the

Will Cancun Agreements Help Save the Planet

by , under NEWS
Will Cancun Agreements Help Save the Planet

The U.N. Climate Change Conference in Cancn came to a close early Saturday morning after 193 countries signed on to a modest agreement to combat climate change. The deal, known as the Cancn Agreements, commits all major economies to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions but does not lay out how far overall global emissions should be cut.
Researchers from the Climate Action Tracker said the pledges would set the world on course to warm by 3.2 degrees Celsius, which could spell disaster for many of the world’s poorest countries on the front lines of climate disruption. The deal also establishes a green climate fund and reaffirms a goal of raising an annual $100 billion in aid for poor countries to combat climate change by 2020.
To better understand the Cancn Agreements, Democracy Now! hosts a debate between Kate Horner, policy analyst at Friends of the Earth, and Andrew Light, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress.
Democracy Now! reported from the U.N. Climate Change Conference in Cancn all last week. For the transcripts and audio/video podcast, visit Democracy Now!. Click here for our complete coverage of the climate change talks. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
