A Bowl Game For the Rest of Us Raises Funds in New Orleans

A Bowl Game For the Rest of Us Raises Funds in New Orleans

Full Post at HelloNewOrleans.com
With a chilly Super Bowl coming up, former New York Giants quarterback Jesse Palmer served as quarterback in the Clorox Toilet Bowl Ode To The Commode – A Bowl Game for the Rest of Us raising $25,000 to upgrade bathrooms in Pan Am Stadium at City Park. “It’s been a long bowl season, but I’ve really been looking forward to this one,” Palmer said. As the quarterback for both teams, he said the game reminded him of a friendly high school pickup game “where you’re playing with total strangers.” The temperature could have been a damper, but Palmer noted, “I’m Canadian — this is like our summer,” adding that helping a New Orleans park recover from post-Katrina levee failure was what brought him down to host the game.
In a friendly private game of flag football, both teams used strips of toilet paper as flags and toilet bowls were integrated into the trophies (pictured above). Palmer, also a former contestant on The Bachelor, was all in from his pep talk at the beginning to the final awards

2010 Week 16 Picks

2010 Week 16 Picks

Home stretch! Literally. The Eagles play their last two games at the Linc, hosting the Vikings this week and the Cowboys next.
So now we’re on to will he or won’t he? Farve and play of course. This feels so familiar.
And if he doesn’t, there’s no real way to prepare for Joe Webb since there’s about a minute of film on him.
And there’s the spread: 14 points? Yikes.
And the Eagles really need to win out if they have any hope of earning that bye and not having to play the Giants again (please God, I don’t want to see the Giants again this year. They HAVE to be pissed).
And there’s the whole “trap game” worry.
Oddly enough, I’m not worried about any of that. Which worries me. Typical Eagles fan.
My pick? Eagles, of course, and to win out (so I’m giving away next week, too).

Goldmans Massive Bonuses Totally Deserved Says Satan

Goldmans Massive Bonuses Totally Deserved Says Satan

NEW YORK (The Borowitz Report) – The gargantuan year-end bonuses paid out to Goldman Sachs executives have received howls of protests from the banking giant’s legion of critics, but not from its most ardent defender: Satan.
In a rare press conference, the usually reclusive Prince of Darkness defended Goldman’s bonuses today, inviting reporters to meet with him at his apartment in New York’s Trump Tower.
“I don’t doubt for a minute that my friends at Goldman deserved those bonuses,” Satan said, adding that “buying their souls was the best investment I ever made.”
“It really is the gift that keeps on giving,” he chuckled.
The Evil One said that the bloated Goldman bonuses were “just the cherry on top” of what has been “one of my best years ever.”
“From Glenn Beck to Tony Hayward to the gang at Goldman, 2010 has had more than its share of heroes,” he said. “I salute them all.”
Satan added that his banner year was even going out with a bang: “Just when I thought this year couldn’t get any better, this weekend I saw ‘Yogi Bear.’”
The Lord of Misrule said he was looking forward to the holiday season, a time when some of “the greatest evil against humanity” is perpetrated: “Every time someone puts on a Christmas sweater, I give myself a high five.”
In other news, President Obama congratulated the New York Giants for compromising with the Philadelphia Eagles. More here.

Top 5 Sports Stories

by , under NEWS
Top 5 Sports Stories

Happy Monday everyone, here’s my Top 5 for December 13, 2010 from Len Berman at www.ThatsSports.com.
1. Quick Hits
* Thanks to the snowstorm in Minneapolis, the Vikings will “host” the Giants tonight in Detroit.
* The Patriots become the first NFL team to clinch a playoff spot.
* If it wasn’t bad enough that the Jets offense disappeared for the second straight game, their strength and conditioning coach stuck out his knee and tripped a Dolphin while he was running down the sideline. Bush league.
* The Yankees and Texas await pitcher Cliff Lee’s decision on where he’ll sign.
* As expected, Cam Newton easily won the Heisman. Now comes the hard part, keeping it.
2. Reading the Tea Leaves
So what are we to make of Cliff Lee not announcing his decision over the weekend? It’s assumed that the Yankees offered him more money and more years than Texas, so obviously this isn’t a slam dunk for the Yankees. The more interesting story is if he stays with Texas. It would mean the Yankees just can’t wave their checkbooks and have players come crawling. And it means the Yankees have to come up with a Plan B. Knowing their history of signing free agents, they probably didn’t have one. Which mean they might have to be smart and creative. In other words, like any other team, for a change. Wouldn’t a salary cap be fun?
3. Snow Date
The NFL schedule is greeted with great fanfare when it’s released each year. And to quote an old Yiddish proverb, “Man plans, God laughs.” The Vikings hosting the Giants in Minnesota yesterday seemed like a good idea. Then the storm hit, the Metrodome roof collapsed, and the game was shifted to Detroit.
All tickets for tonight’s game are free. If you had a ticket for yesterday’s game, you’ll get a refund. In these tough economic times in Detroit, the Sports Gods had a better idea for fans who can’t afford tickets and PSL’s. Very cool.
4. Waffling
In Detroit, at hockey games, they are likely to throw an octopus on the ice. In Toronto, a new tradition was born last week: waffles. Unhappy fans threw them after a loss to Philadelphia. It sparked a huge debate in the hockey world. Why waffles? Do they actually sell them at the stadium? Within hours, somebody cleverly posted a little “waffle video.”
And the biggest question, what would happen if the Maple Leafs lost to Montreal Saturday night? We’ll never know. Toronto beat the Canadiens 3-1. Maybe Toronto fans would be better served this holiday season by taking their “frustrations” to a food bank.
5. Sold!
It set a record for sports memorabilia. The original 13 rules of basketball, as written by Dr. James Naismith in 1891. They sold at auction for over $4 million. The rules were very different back then. Nine players per team, using soccer balls. No dribbling. Peach baskets for hoops. Although one rule looked familiar. It stated that when the NBA is formed, you’ll be allowed to take three steps before traveling is called, four in the playoffs.
Happy Birthday: Oisk. Former Brooklyn Dodger pitcher Carl Erskine. 84.
Bonus Birthday: Rob Petrie himself, actor Dick Van Dyke. 85.
Today in Sports: The Green Bay Packers beat the Boston Redskins 21-6 at the Polo Grounds to win their first NFL Championship. Why was the game played on a neutral site? The Redskins had already announced they were moving to Washington the following season. 1936.
Bonus Event: It was so 10 years ago. Al Gore concedes. W. wins the White House. 2000.

2010 NFL Week 11 Picks

by , under NEWS
2010 NFL Week 11 Picks

All the bye weeks are over. Now it’s a race to the playoffs. And surprisingly (or at least, surprising me), the Eagles are in it.
This week the Eagles host the Giants, in a battle for the lead in the NFC East.
So far, the Giants have beat the Panthers (1-8), the Texans (4-5), the Bears (6-3), the Lions (2-7), the Cowboys (2-7), and the Seahawks (5-4, but in the JV division), and lost to the Cowboys, the Colts (who the Eagles beat two weeks ago), and the Titans (who apparently own the NFC East this year). So two wins against teams that are over .500.
The Eagles have beat the Lions (2-7), the Jaguars (5-4), the 49ers (3-6), the Falcons (7-2), the Colts (6-3), and the Redskins (4-5), and have lost to the Packers, the Redskins, and the Titans (see above RE: owning the NFC East). So three wins against teams that are over .500.
The System says Giants, and after Monday on a short week, we could be due for a let down.
On the other hand, Michael Vick has clearly been eating his Wheaties and may, in fact, actually BE Batman. If he can keep playing like he did Monday, the NFL should pretty much call off the rest of the season and give the Eagles the Lombardi trophy.
Of course, he’s not going to play like that every week. And the Giants — or at least Antonio Pierce — seem to think they can stop him.
But I just can’t find it in myself to pick the Giants. Not after what I saw in Largo. Eagles.

Top 5 Sports Stories

by , under NEWS
Top 5 Sports Stories

Happy Tuesday everyone, here’s my Top 5 for October 12, 2010 from Len Berman at www.ThatsSports.com.
1. Quick Hits
* The Giants win the Division Series, The Giants win the Division Series. They beat the Braves in 4 games and will face the Phillies for the National League pennant starting Saturday.
* Braves manager Bobby Cox is cheered by Atlanta fans after his managerial finale. The Giants stop their on the field celebration to applaud him as well.
* The deciding game between Texas and Tampa Bay is tonight in St. Petersburg. 8:00pm Eastern on TBS. The Yankees await the winner.
* Some guys have all the luck. Actress Minka Kelly voted “Sexiest Woman Alive” by Esquire. Her fiance? Someone named Derek Jeter.
* The Jets (4-1) beat Brett Favre and Minnesota (1-3) last night 29-20.
2. Dodge Ball
Brett Favre bobbed and weaved after the game last night, and wouldn’t address the allegations against him. He reportedly apologized to his teammates yesterday for being a distraction. In truth, isn’t Favre always a distraction? Talk about a lightning rod. It’s always about him.
Two other notes. A good friend of mine, a Top 5 subscriber, says the story about Favre making passes at Jets massage therapists is absolutely true. My friend used the same therapist a few weeks after it happened, and she confirmed it.
And the best line about Favre sending pictures of his penis to the Jets sideline reporter comes from Jack Finarelli in the Sports Curmudgeon: “Would that be considered the ultimate in junk mail?”
3. Pitching, Pitching, Pitching
Here we go. Count how many times you hear the word “rest” in the next several weeks. 4 days rest, 3 days rest. The Yankees don’t want to wear out their pitchers on “short rest,” so A.J. Burnett is in the rotation for the American League Championship Series. Yankee fans are gnashing their teeth over that one. But rest? In 1964, Bob Gibson clinched the World Series on 2 days rest. Sandy Koufax repeated the trick the very next year. And Cristy Mathewson won the World Series for the 1905 Giants on one day rest.
So over the next several weeks, when you hear about pitchers working with just 3 days rest, just think of the old line. “You can rest when you’re dead.”
4. Lemme In Coach
During Wimbledon, eventual champ Rafael Nadal was fined $2,000 for receiving coaching during his third round match. Now, he tells a Spanish newspaper that when he was serving for the match in the U.S. Open final against Novak Djokovic, he didn’t know where to serve so he looked up to the box where his coach, uncle Toni was sitting. They “told him” to serve wide, so he did. In essence, Nadal is admitting he cheated. I don’t condone it, but I wonder why tennis is the only sport, other than in Davis Cup play, where coaching is verboten? Then again, if coaching were legal, would insecure players ask where every serve should go? If that happened it would slow tennis down to baseball speed.
5. Multi-Tasking
Check this out.
It’s not every day you see the high school homecoming queen in her football jersey and sash! In one hand a football helmet, in the other a tiara. Homecoming queen Katie Scalzo from Wyoming Area Pa. High school is a kicker on the football team. As for the homecoming king? He wore a tux. He’s on the baseball team.
Happy Birthday: Former Yankee shortstop and announcer Tony Kubek. 74.
Bonus Birthday: Talented actor Hugh Jackman. 42.
Today in Sports: The St. Louis Cards beat the Red Sox in the 7th game of the World Series, as Bob Gibson (featured in my kids book The 25 Greatest Baseball Players Of All Time,) pitches his third complete game of the series, and also hits a homer. Both his 2nd and 3rd wins came on just 3 days rest. 1967.
Bonus Event: Chris Columbus lands in the “New World.” Actually it was the Bahamas. 1492.
I’ll be on America’s Nightly Scoreboard on the FOX Business Channel tonight at 7:30pm.

The NYGMen Podcast Week 3 REVIEWWeek 4 PREVIEW We REALLY gotta beat da Bearss

In this Week 3 Review and Week 4 Preview, we do our best to find a silver lining in the otherwise gut-wrenching loss to the Tennessee Titans. We discuss whether it’s really time to get concerned about the G-Men, whether Col. Tom is losing the team, and whether Antrel Rolle is out for the team or out for himself. Also, discussion about Justin Tuck, Jason Pierre-Paul, Corey Webster, Mike Francesa (as always), whether the Jets were wrong to play Braylon Edwards, the most recent ESPN Power Rankings, and what Greg thought about his first visit to the New Meadowlands Stadium. And, of course, we look forward to Sunday night’s game against the undefeated (an arguably overachieving) Chicago Bears. LET’S GO BIG BLUE!!

Top 5 Sports Stories

by , under NEWS
Top 5 Sports Stories

Happy Monday everyone, here’s my Top 5 for September 27, 2010 from Len Berman at www.ThatsSports.com.
1. Quick Hits
* The Atlanta Falcons knocked off the Super Bowl Champion Saints 27-24 in overtime.
* Dallas and Minnesota finally win their first games of the season. The 49ers are winless.
* When Stanford fullback/linebacker Owen Marecic scored touchdowns on both offense and defense against Notre Dame Saturday, he became the first to do it in 4 years.
* The Texas Rangers clinched their division this weekend. The Phillies clinched a playoff spot.
* Jim Furyk wins the PGA Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup and pockets a cool $11.35 million. The Ryder cup begins Friday in Wales.
2. Crime and Punishment
Braylon Edwards did not start for the Jets last night. His punishment for his DUI arrest? One quarter on the sidelines. After that, he caught just two passes, but they were huge. One gave the Jets the lead for good. The other was a critical first down. So Jets brass must be proud of themselves. They didn’t let a little thing like drunk driving get in the way of a win.
Meanwhile, is there something in the water in the New Meadowlands Stadium? The Giants were out of control yesterday. Imagine if the Jets had played so undisciplined? Rex Ryan and Woody Johnson would have been ripped apart by the fans and the media for running a frat house.
3. Bing-O
Thanks to Pittsburgh Pirates part-owner Bing Crosby, the entire telecast of game 7 of the 1960 World Series exists. It was sitting in his wine cellar, and now the world will get to see it in December on the MLB Network. I remember watching that afternoon game at my friend’s house. Half a century ago, I recall the huge Hal Smith homer. Also, my hero Mickey Mantle diving back into first as the tying run scored. And of course Bill Mazeroski’s homer, which won it all. (And eventually got him elected into the Hall of Fame.) I can’t wait to see if the video matches my memories. Now if they can only find a video of Super Bowl I. It was televised live by both CBS and NBC and all the tapes got erased. Maybe it’s in somebody’s wine cellar?
4. Fan Fare
Teams with expensive tickets that go unsold, take note. An Italian soccer team has come up with the answer for empty seats. Painted vinyl, with images of fans, stretched across empty sections of seats. Looks great on television. Take a look.
The downside? It does nothing for concession sales. I fondly recall the New Jersey Nets pumping fake audio into the arena to make it sound more exciting on TV. The jig was up when it sounded like the crowd was going wild, and the camera zoomed in on a lady just sitting there picking her teeth.
5. Shocking
I can’t believe it. According to the National Enquirer, Tiger Woods bailed on his sex addiction therapy. What condition could possibly contribute to his miracle cure? Being single?
Happy Birthday: One of the best guys you’ll ever meet in or out of sports. They named the Pesky Pole (the right field foul pole) after him in Fenway Park. Johnny Pesky. 91.
Bonus Birthday: Oscar winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow. (I knew her grandfather.) 38.
Today in Sports: Walter Alston may have managed the Dodgers for 23 years, but he only appeared in one Major League game. In his only at bat he struck out on 3 pitches. 1936.
Bonus Event: The Tonight Show makes its debut on NBC with Steve Allen as host. 1954.
My appearance on the Howard Stern show has been rescheduled from today to this Thursday at 7am.
If you’re interested in having me sign your copy of The 25 Greatest Baseball Players Of All Time, email me, and we can work out the details.
