Amanda Terkel, Senior Politics Reporter at The Huffington Post, appeared Monday on ‘The Rachel Maddow Show’ to discuss new anti-union measures being proposed by Republicans in Congress.
“They’re going right now after air and rail workers. The way it works right now is if you want to form a union, you just need to get a majority of the workers who turn out to vote. But the way that Republicans would like to do it, and the way that it’s been for many years, is you need to get a majority of all workers, even ones who don’t turn out to vote.

Public Pensions 101

With the recent spate of attacks on climate science and evolution it should not be a surprise that traditional defined benefit pensions in the public sector are now also under attack. There are powerful political actors in this country who are anxious to build a bridge back to the 19th century; taking us to a time where working people enjoyed few protections and could not count on sharing in the gains of economic growth.
The effort to weaken or destroy public sector unions and take away their pensions is the latest battle in this larger war. As usual, the right has been busy making things up to push its agenda, confident that the media will not expose untrue claims.
At the center of the right’s story is the view that governments are somehow being reckless or irresponsible when they provide guaranteed pensions for their workers. They tell us that these guaranteed benefits will bankrupt state and local governments, imposing impossible burdens on future taxpayers.

Howard Fineman Discusses Wisconsin And Unions On MSNBCs The Last Word With Lawrence ODonnell VIDEO

The Huffington Post’s Senior Political Editor Howard Fineman appeared Tuesday night on MSNBC’s “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell” to discuss Wisconsin and the current dispute over labor unions.
Fineman pointed out that “the public is already on the side of the public employee unions.” He elaborated, “lots of other Republican governors, Mitch Daniels in Indiana, Tom Corbett in Pennsylvania, Rick Scott in Florida, all have said to one degree or another that they would not go after employee bargaining rights in order to cut the budget…the Governor of Wisconsin is way out there on a limb and Obama wants to just leave him there.”
Expanding on the political calculations of the White House, Fineman said, “the President and his advisors feel that they’re getting some political benefit out of this nationally.
